The savefile is just a plain text JSON-file. If you just need to change the amount echoes you have you can simply find&replace it.

is that file located in the folder for sunless sea in the steamapps folder?
and if so, where from there is the saves?

No, it's located in the AppData. On windows. On Linux it's in ~/.config. On mac I don't know.

If you can't find it, just ask your OS to search for the file named "Autosave.json", I don't think you have many files with this name.

Some advice if you do this, don't do it when your frustrated and give yourself 900,000 echos, takes a bit of fun out of the game, try a more reasonable amount, where you still want to earn but have some breathing room.

i found the file but where the hell is the echo amount? theres about a billion words to sift through

and also im only trying to get back some echoes i made but lost when the game crashed after making lots of them

Well I can't seem to find the echoes in the savegame.

Where did you find it Bluejay11?
Bluejay11 Oct 2, 2016 @ 2:06am
i serched my amount of echoes, you can acces that function by clicking the edit button in note pad then cicking find. my amount of echoes was next to "Level":587167,"AssociatedQuality":null,"
i hope that helps

"AssociatedQuality" is not really helpful, but what is, is the "AssociatedQualityId" which should be "102028". The "level" describes the amount you have.

i just copied the code next to my echo amount

cant even find the sunless sea game folder lol, shows you how much i know
This was helpful all these years after. The game is mighty slow, and I already play Fallen London in the browser. I really don't want to spend my time in Sunless Seas running mushroom wine to a port and back in the vague hope of getting enough Echoes for my next ship, etc. So much to see and do in the game and we're stuck behind Fallen London's Pay for Fate scenario basically, each little bit of text is just one more Action of only so many to finally get the whole picture. I love Fallen London. I don't mind if it takes months, but Sunless Sea? I'm just interested in the ports. I don't want to spend months trading. I don't.

You don't have to. The game isn't really supposed to be about echo collecting but you can get a lot on subsequent playthroughs. Any time you're about to retire, sell EVERYTHING. Make sure you got a scion and then select both pupil and salvager legacies. That allows you to keep 100% of your echos. Do this several times over. I'd do it if you're planning to go after achievements that equal death such as Lose Your Mind, Never Stop Sinking, Death By Water, etc. This is a great way to start a new captain off with more money.

I share a similar concern.

I played Sunless Skies during the Covid lockdowns and loved it. So, I decided to check out Fallen London, and fell for it hard. How hard? Well, I’m over halfway to a Hellworm, if that tell you anything. Or, more accurately, a quarter of the way the Hellworm Riding Boots.

This is does not alleviate my fears. And yet, Failbetter’s outstanding prose has low-key ruined other story focused games for me. I need more, and both Sunless Sea and its DLC are currently on sale. Hold my Peppercaps, I’m going in!
