Hardest original RE1?
I've played Deadly Silence a few days ago, as Chris (labelled Hard) on Rebirth mode. And I noticed that while the enemy placement was indeed considerably harder than vanilla RE1 experience, with stronger enemies replacing zombies or appearing in normally empty rooms, the enemies themselves were weaker than I remembered.

Most Zombies went down with 4-5 handgun shots, Hunters took only 2 shotgun shells at close/mid range, and even the improved knife was actually useful. I have not replayed any other version of original RE1 since I played the remake, but I remember pretty well needing 3 or even 4 shotgun shells to kill a single Hunter, and not having auto-aim on top of it.

So original RE1 had multiple versions/ports, with regional differences, and exclusive modes across different platforms. Does anyone remember which one was supposedly the hardest RE1 experience overall?

RE1 PC Version. Unlock and use either the M249 or the Ingram. Makes enemies significantly tougher than usual.

Normaly you can kill a Hunter with a single magnum bullet. Do the stuff above and you'll need magnum rounds to kill them. Even more, when it comes to the grenade launcher.

This will hit especially hard, when you are used to the japanese Versions "first run" difficulty, which is somewhat similar to the "chicken out"- setting on western version. In those two cases enemies fold very quickly (Black Tiger can be killed with a single (!) Napalmround).

Asides from that the arranged mode for the Directors Cut might come to mind, but despite having a lot more enemies, it can be also alot easier. Especially as Chris, thanks to the fact, that you can get the Pyhton way earlier than usual. And on top of that, you can find more ammo for it.

Saturn Version throws in a new enemy but its basically a reworked Hunter which shows up on places, were you normally face hunters anyway so the only difference would be the additional Tyrant in the lab. But given, that the Lab Tyrant is weak and slow anyway, it wont make much of a difference.

...but I remember pretty well needing 3 or even 4 shotgun shells to kill a single Hunter

Normally they can take 3 close quarter shots. But I always find the shotgun very unreliable, when it comes to determine damage/HP Values.

What mode did you play Deadly Silence on?

Rebirth Mode is the one that remixes enemies, adds some new puzzles, and changes others.

Original Mode has the same enemies as RE1 Original and keeps everything the same (except the knife button and quickturn addition)

I had no idea that unlocking those weapons would make enemies stronger. Does that apply for the GOG version or is it another specific PC release?

I imagined the hardest was one of the Director's Cut on Arrange/Original (whichever was the equivalent for 'Western' difficulty) as Chris. I don't remember if the Director's Cut version I played long ago had actual difficulty settings besides that cheat to turn the green letters and make the game easier.

Played on Rebirth. Did a test today as Chris, but now on Classic. And yeah, Rebirth has more enemies and nastier placement, but turns out some enemies die quicker. Tested on a bunch of Hunters and they die from 3 close range shells on Classic and 2 on Rebirth. Strangely the lab Tyrant took 6 magnum shots in Rebirth but only 3 in Classic.

Originally I had that case with the version that was part of the "Trio Infernale"- pack, which was an exclusive release in Germany. It contained Resident Evil, Carmageddon 2 and Unreal. (No idea how these 3 go together but whatever...)
However, it seems not to be present in the GOG version anymore. Did a testrun a couple of minutes before and the enemies did not have altered HP, regardless of the use of the Ingram.

As for the Directors Cut: The early magnum is a game changer. It makes the second visit to the mansion so much easier (atleast if plan to fight the hunters), kills plant 42 faster and on top of that you'll get additional 24(!) Magnumbullets at the Tigerstatue if place the red jewel there.
I'd say it compensates very well for the addtional enemies. Though there are still a few rooms that I'd consider somewhat dangerous.

Wow never knew about that equipping the special weapons bump up the difficulty. The trio infernal version is basically the german version, have you tried selecting that one on GoG?

For me the hardest one still remains Deadly Silence but probably because I am used to the OG version so much that I can run it safely without issues, deadly silence twists things up a little and I never got used to that first person knifing on the touchpad.

Ok, thank you for confirming that

Yeah, Rebirth can be tough until you get the timing in those first person knifing sections (I didn't even realize I could open the inventory to heal in those sections in my first playthrough). But you can get a good chunk of free ammo in the late game if you can beat those parts unharmed.

Also didn't know until this year that you can easily counter vomit zombies with the microphone :)

Yeah it seems there was a lot of care and attention put into deadly silence (dont forget it has also local multiplayer), I just wish the backgrounds would be more detailed and higher res as they really do look in stark contrast to the character models but thats just the limitation of the DS.
Lanzagranadas Jul 18, 2024 @ 8:09am
^ I think the downscaled background and FMV quality are the only things that keep Deadly Silence from being the superior version in every way.

It's got door skip, cutscene skip, improved character models and animations, permanent knife with its own shortcut, quick turn, tactical reload, touch screen inventory, Rebirth mode, and even the Master of Knifing and local coop/versus modes.

I was so in love with the remake that I honestly didn't appreciate RE DS much back in the day. But many years later it became my favorite non-remake RE1 version by far.

Its a similar case of "if they waited for the next system it would easily be definitive". Cause the 3DS could have probably handled less compressed backgrounds pretty easily.

Same issue with Persona 3 Portable. That game has a ton of improvements on Persona 3 FES (the previous version), but they just had to release it on PSP which led to a ton of things getting downgraded too. If they had waited for the PSVita like they did with Persona 4, then it would have gotten a clear definitive version just like 4 Golden.

Hell the version I’m playing is painful.

I thought I was doing relatively well keeping paths clear until zombies just broke in through the windows of the hallway outside the bathroom on the first floor.

I know the dogs breaking in is a recurring thing but please tell me they aren’t this hallway is rough enough to go down.

RE DS is the easiest version by far. Not only does the knife not take up an inventory slot, but it's accessible with a single button press making the whole experience infinitely easier. Every time you down a zombie you can hack away saving ammo with every encounter. I remember it was so easy I would finish it in about half an hour, barely taking any damage and ending the game drowning in spare resources.

The hardest version would be the original western PS1 release of the game that removed autoaim and made enemies harder to kill. Done on purpose to discourage players from finishing it in a single rental. You could go even further and play the PAL 50hz release for slower gameplay and less responsive controls.

Assuming you're talking about the remake then yeah, it's like that. Generally designed to trip up players of the original with the Crimson Heads, and the way that the mansion becomes progressively more dangerous as you go along.

It doesn't. Unique to the PC version, Jill starts in easy mode. Finish it once regardless of unlocks and your second run will be slightly harder, equal to Chris' starting difficulty. Still not much of a challenge because of how Jill has almost instant access to both the shotgun and grenade launcher.

The RE Remake available on Steam is definitely the hardest RE title I played so far (played all on Standard difficulty). And I even played RE0.

Im playing the DS version right now, and i gotta admit, im not a fan of the slashing zombies with the stylus pen. But yes i noticed the zombies were going down easier and more head shots than the OG version.

also my hands kinda getting crampy holding the DS, maybe i need the XL version lol.
