Best Graphical Settings (1080p + Normal FXAA)
So yeah you can crank up anti-aliasing to FXAA3HQ and even up the resolution to 4k by editing the ini file....
But since Resident Evil uses pre-rendered backgrounds... these settings only really benefit the 3D assets and kinda leave the 2D assets behind... creating an odd distiction between the real-time 3D assets and the rest of the scene, which is mostly made up of 2D assets.

I was originally playing at 720p with everything else maxed... and it looked okay. But thinking about it.. I decided to try 1080p again.. but this time I turned down FXAA3HQ to standard FXAA. The thing about standard FXAA is it tends to put a blur over the entire scene. Normally this isn't always entirely desired... but in this case it mitigates the visual differences between what is actually real-time 3D and the 2D assets.

If you're playing in 1080p or even higher resolution, I recommend giving Standard FXAA a try and see how you feel. I think it creates a more pleasing composition overall... Just my opinion

If I'm not mistaken FXAA takes edges in consideration but not other artifacts like banding let's say... so it'll still be something "standing out" at almost all times... I guess 720p upscaled to 1080p would still be the better option... And to keep latency to a minimum, just make sure that your GPU is doing the upscaling, not your Monitor (I'll assume here we're only talking about flat panel displays not CRT's where the other way around would be the better option)

FXAA ignores the 3D information and softens edges on a pixel by pixel basis. With that being said.. it softens everything... even 2D assets. The downside of FXAA in most 3D games is it tends to reduce texture detail because of this.. For instance.. if there are a lot of cracks in wood... FXAA will mistake this for aliasing and soften those cracks and end up softening the details.

I don't really know what the differences are exactly between FXAA and FXAA3HQ... but im guessing FXAA3HQ does a better job of distinguising the edges of 3D objects and leaving texture detail intact. That's just a guess... Google won't come up with any good explanations on the fly.
But I think in the case of this game.. having all the details softened, in my opinion, makes the game look better overall. It's kinda like applying a blur to a photo of yourself to make the blemishes on your face less prominant. I think Capcom just included all 3 FXAA methods because that's been standard in their RE PC ports in the last few years.

I agree. The game looks far better and more consistent with standard fxaa than with the other two options. It's a bit of a shame, as most people will think higher number = better, and just stick to that.

I wish there were an option for user made post processing shaders... Shaders like gaussian blur, scanlines, crt-tv, luma-sharpen, and others...

These crappy options are Capcom's engine standards. If you like a new vision just overrun game filters and enable super sample in your card's software or morphological filtering.

I see no significant performance hit from running the HQ AA setting from none at all. We're talking 70% of a 6870 to 75% if that; also uses i5 2500. I remember Resident Evil 6 and Revelations being much the same way. Not just GPU usage, there's not much of a hit of vRAM either. Steady 60 FPS except when that Snake first appears.

With the Batman Arkham series, Skyrim and Crysis series there's big uptick in vRAM usage and GPU usage.

lol you'll feel like your character is walking on a threadmill with those settings

I totally agree that it looks best with FAAA. The slight blur really mixes well with the radeon image sharpening that I use. I have it set at 60% on this title with FXAA at 1080p. Can we take a moment to say actually how good this game looks at 1080p. I actually think some games benefit from less detail. I dont think it would work in 4k as the other poster points out.

the backgrounds look like ♥♥♥♥ in this version specially compared to RE0 on Steam and even the Gamecube version. Use this mod to alleviate the issue:
