Resident Evil HD Remaster Steam / PC General FAQ (Updated 02/10/15)
Q: What version of the game is this based on?
A: Resident Evil HD Remaster is based on the 2002 Gamecube version of Resident Evil, which itself was a completely redesigned, built-from-the-ground-up version of the original Resident Evil from 1996.

Q: Does the game support mouse and keyboard, or is a controller required?
A: The game supports full mouse/keyboard control as well as XInput-based devices such as the Xbox 360 and Xbox One game pad. Inventory management is also done via keyboard or game pad.

Q: What control schemes are available?
A: Two control schemes are supported, and can be toggled at any time – the “Original” control scheme works as it did in the original game (typically referred to as “tank controls”), while the “Alternate” control scheme allows you to fluidly move in any direction. Keyboard layouts are fully customizable, as well.

Q: Does the game support widescreen?
A: The aspect ratio can be displayed in one of two ways, and can be changed from the options menu or in-game pause menu under “Display.” “Original” keeps the 4:3 presentation of the original game, and will add black bars to the sides of the screen. “Wide” is a new 16:9 presentation that smoothly scrolls vertically as the character moves across the screen.

What graphics options are available?
A: Resolution options, windowed or full-screen mode, and Vertical Sync options are available. Framerate can be changed between 30 FPS, 60 FPS, and Variable modes. Anti-aliasing, shadow quality, and texture quality can also be adjusted.

What is the maximum framerate?
A: Resident Evil HD Remaster supports 30 FPS when minimum specifications are met. 60 FPS is also available when recommended specifications are met. A variable framerate option is also available, but framerates above 60 FPS have not been tested, nor supported, and are not warranted by Capcom.

Are cutscenes in real-time or pre-rendered?
While most of the game uses in-game rendering for character models and cutscenes, some cutscenes are pre-rendered due to the nature of the 2002 original.

Q: Are there achievements and trading cards?
A: Yes to both! 44 achievements and 6 trading cards are available.

Q: There's a thriving modding community for PC games. Any plan for Workshop support in this version?
A: There are no plans to add Steam Workshop given technical challenges working with legacy code from 2002. At the same time, we will not stop modders from toying around with the Steamworks edition. Modding is not supported by Capcom, so play at your own risk.

Q: Do you have any plans to support DirectX 10, 11, and beyond?
A: No. The game does not use nor require advanced functions offered through DX10 / 11. The game will utilize DirectX 9.0c for maximum OS compatibility.

Q: Do I have to manually enable and configure game pad controller when switching to / from keyboard and mouse?
A: There is no need to enter the options menu whenever you want to switch between keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. Many recent Capcom games, including RE HD, dynamically switch between keyboard and mouse and gamepad input mode. In fact, the game polls both input devices simultaneously so technically you can use both devices at the same time if you’d like.

Q: Is the frame rate capped at 60 FPS? Can I choose higher frame rate to take advantage of my 120Hz / 144Hz monitor?
A: The game offers locked 30 FPS or 60 FPS, as well as a Variable option, through the in-game options menu. Setting the framerate to Variable may allow a higher framerate, but framerates above 60 FPS have not been tested, nor supported, and are not warranted by Capcom.

Q: Are there additional language options?
A: In-game subtitles include English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Japanese.

Q: How do I remove the on-screen mouse cursor?
A: Due to the nature of the game being able to run in both windowed and full-screen mode, the mouse cursor remains on screen during gameplay. Moving the mouse cursor to the upper right or lower right corner of the screen will remove it from view.

Q: How do I quit the game?
A: From the Pause menu, select “Quit Game” to return to the main menu. From the main menu, select “Quit.”

Q: I cannot get the game to boot. It seems to crash instantly.
A: It may be possible that you’re missing or have an outdated DirectX component required by the game. Please visit the following URL to download and update your system with the latest DirectX files. DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer[www.microsoft.com]

Q: Where can I find the config.ini file? I’d like to further customize and tweak the game.
A: While not officially supported, you can access the config.ini file from the following location.

C:\Users\xxxxxxxx\AppData\Local\capcom\Resident Evil - biohazard@HD REMASTER\

Replace xxxxxxxx with your Windows login name.

Updated! Q: Can I change the aspect ratio of the game?
A: The aspect ratio for Resident Evil HD Remaster is 16:9 by default. While not a documented feature of the game and not officially supported, you can manually change the aspect ratio by opening the config.ini file as outlined above, then adding the following under [DISPLAY]:

ASPECT=X:Y

Replace X and Y with your desired aspect ratio. Please see the disclaimer below before modifying any files.

Updated! Q: Can I change the resolution of the game manually?
A: While not a documented feature of the game and not officially supported, the resolution can be changed in the config.ini file as outlined above, by modifying the "RESOLUTION" line to your desired resolution. Please see the disclaimer below before modifying any files.

Disclaimer: Changing parameters beyond the game’s scope and your PC specification (e.g., setting resolutions not supported by your graphics card and / or monitor) may cause adverse, potentially irreversible effects. It goes without saying that modifying system files enters a “play at your own risk” territory.
