'Dem dogs...
...kill you in two bites, and there's no way to shake them off when they've got you in the arm? Or am I missing something?

I think the red herbs still increase max health in this version. Maybe, I don't remember that well.

Red herbs don't increase max health, they just heal you to full when combined with green herbs.

OP, you don't shake them off. You go back, get your shotgun, and blast them before they get to you.
Theres a defensive item called a 'taser' that you can pick up. When equiped as the defensive item, if a dog goes for a 'pounce' and lands on you, you automatically taser it. In most cases it pretty much one shots it, unfortunately they are rare to come by.

Additionally, I don't think the red herb on its own increases your health at all. In fact i'm pretty sure the red herb is useless unless combined with another herb.

Your missing something. Use both analogue sticks, and jiggle them like a mofo. The dog's are a pain in the arse, but I find the crows worse, especially if your running round with the Grenade Launcher. The Bees and Snake thing's are even worse than that.

You can't shake them off? I guess I'll just run if I see another one...

as above states, wiggle the analogue sticks left and right fast... I've tested this, if you don't wiggle anything they are attached to you for ages, taking off loads of health... But by wiggling the sticks fast you chuck the dog off alot quicker.

Pretty sure you can avoid/reduce damage taken by dogs when they knock you over if you spam your dpad(or stick)/run button/action button. You'll know you did it if you don't see blood.

Edit: Same thing works with crimson head (and maybe zombies?) grab attacks, if you don't spam your buttons they will bite you twice instead of just once.

Is there a way to do that with a keyboard? Directional buttons maybe?

Obviously. I didn't say all that because it's obvious that you have to mix it with other herbs. I know that in RE2 it increased max health as it refilled your health because it seemed like more hits are needed to put you in a critical state after using them. I didn't know if it was the same for other RE games though. Otherwise, why have first-aid sprays which would do the same thing as a red+green herb combo (if it just refilled health only).

There would be a say to do it on keyboard although i have only played this using my 360 controller. I'd expect the walk button left and right real fast would do it, give it a try and let me know.

Mashing the face buttons usually worked in the older games. I guess I'll have to try the analog stick method.

Buy yeah, I was struggling with the dogs as well. I'm used to Jill/Chris being able to actually aim at the dogs and not wasting shotgun ammo on them. But for the dog collar part, apparently the shotgun is a must.

That depends on what tools you take. I'm quite sure that I can't be the only one who forgot about the Bee's, and didn't have a Shot Gun with me at the time. The Crows are best taken down with the Shot Gun, or avoided all together if allowed.

A Green and Red Herb just heals you to 100%, there is no way to increase your max health until RE 4 when you combined a green and yellow herb.
