Not ashamed I had to use a walkthrough.
I had a Nintendo 64 so I skipped out on the PS1 classics. I mostly got into the RE franchise around RE4/5/6. There were a lot of moments that made me ask "Who would ever think to do that?" Like blowing the dog whistle in a specific spot and examining it for a fake key. I'm not a fan of the backtracking but the game is designed around it so I understand.

Overall, I liked it. It looks amazing, but I wouldn't play again. I'm too used to game designs that have me moving forward and have more engaging action. But if RE2/3/Code Veronica came to PC I'd still play them.

Blowing the dog whistle in a specific location it's pretty much hinted in a "readable clue" as do all other unthinkable actions that you might take along the game in order to solve the puzzles...
There's pretty much no puzzle in this game that doesn't rely on "clues" of whatever nature. It's just a tedious job to find the "clues" for the first time, that's all. It requires patience and perseverance. As an average modern gamer, patience and perseverance are the least of your virtues.

That's not true. Stealth by nature require patience, and I love Splinter Cell, Last of Us, Metal Gear Solid, etc.

Very well then. You should try Alien Isolation if you didn't already.

I played the original and the GC version once. I got stuck on the dog whistle myself, but remembered that clues are left thoughout the game. I had to backstrack to all the rooms until I found the clue. It's in the 1st floor mansion, left side, the room were the zombie pops out of the closet.

It's interesting that now a lot of people realize that Resident Evil is pretty much a point and click game with light shooting and combat elements.
Even the fixed cameras are very much alike old classic point and click games and most of the time, you have to find out how to keep going, by looking for itens and stuff. With the difference that the combat in itself is simple, but interesting enough.

It's a shame that they didn't continue to build on top of this concept, they could have improved the shooting, whilst keeping some of the main characteristics.
If you pay atention there are clues to all puzzles for example the clock has the painting with the two knights with swords as indication of correct closck pointers the book with lion or eagle open and give medalions, the statues gas if you look at wall in front there is the combination, the paintings you have the last one telling you the right order of the colours and so on...its a game to play and pay atention to details...

Nothing really wrong with that. Just enjoy playing the game the way you see fit.

I remember using a guide for the original. But that because i was like 7 years old and didn't even understand English yet. (as i speak Portuguese).

But seriously... The file explains in details exactly what to do with the dog whistle and it even has a picture of the area you're suppose to use it. Damn, it even tells you that there is a hidden object attached to the collar. It's not even a clue, it's a guide itself.

Impossible.

1- The "Dog Whistle" item is attached to the file with the detailed explanation. It's impossible to pick up the whistle without getting the file which automatically opens and forces you to read it. You can skip the files though (if you want to wander inside the mansion for an hour without knowing what to do).

2- Every file you read gets stored in your Inventory in the "Files" section. No need to backtrack for them as they're not even there anymore.

3- The whistle is found in the 2F east study room (above the east safe room), not the closet room.

As a first time player, I really enjoyed how the whole game is just one giant puzzle. The zombies are never a huge threat unless you backtrack often, which is going to happen if like me, you've never played and don't use walkthroughs. That's what made the game hard is having to walk down hallways where people are still alive, trying to figure out where the hell a certain object goes. As for the examining part, I feel like after you figure out that you have to examine that arrow to get the arrowhead, you should realize that it would probably be a good idea to examine most items.

I agree with Vic. I've not played since the original version of REMake was released, and I've forgotten almost everything about it except the basic mechanics and mindset you need to play. I even failed to get to the lighter and canteen quickly enough to burn up the very first Crimson Head laying on the ground outside the door to the Armour Key hallways!

Though I don't remember him being there in the GC version. I was sure (barring any zombies you kill yourself) the first Crimson Head is a scripted encounter in the furnace room with the masks of see/hear/speak no evil.

you play for fun so, who would blame you. its not like you cheated. old games have a diferent difficulty, and backtracking everything makes you forget one thing or two.

To be honest, I'm kind of used to puzzles with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ solutions after playing through Zelda OoT. :conwayshrug:

I always said Resident Evil games were QUESTS. Almost all games with fixed camera were a mix of QUEST/ACTION. In modern days this mix is very rare, Capcom cut off quest part of the game and modern Resident Evil lost its magic...
