Hence my and several other people's responses being relevant to the topic at hand and wondering the same thing about the redundant pictures and/or weird design of the puzzle.
Do you even read before making sweeping generalizations and insulting people en mass?
Except for the part where you spelled out what the OP was asking when you didn't need to due to the fact that many people in the thread where already engaged in such a dialogue regarding the actual matter at hand, ergo you coming along and deciding to be 'cool' on your high horse or pump your ego for whatever reason by calling out the few that didn't is pretty darn redundant, no?
For people who still don't get it like this guy, the direct, simple, and glaringly obvious answer to the OP, is that the logic IS trial and error.
If you look at the pictures they they all have slightly differing hues.
The pictures however don't exactly match the statues, but ARE close.
In order of hues, the darkest is the spear/lance (which I correlate to the halberd, since they are polearms), then the axe (even though the picture is of a single bladed axe and the statue has a double bladed axe), then the shield, then, the brightest hued picture is of the sword.
And that's the order to push them in, push the haldberd guy, then the axe guy, then the shield guy, then the sword guy pushes himself in.
Still thats not a very clear or understandable set of clues, but it DOES seem to work.
First of all, trial and error is integral to figuring out this puzzle but so is observation. For me the correct order for me was halberd knight, axe knight, and then shield knight. The sword knight statue will then move into place once those three are moved in the correct order. Make sure that you push each statue in twice. I believe there is a click/clunk sound when a statue is fully in place.
Now, I think the pictures on the wall are there to mislead you. They are arranged in this order:
Upper indented row: axe knight (black club frame), sword knight (red diamond frame)
Lower row: shield knight (red heart frame), halberd knight (black spade frame).
You can also notice that each knight is looking in a specific direction.
Axe knight (with open helmet) is looking at sword knight.
Sword knight (with open helmet) is looking at shield knight.
Shield knight (with open helmet) is looking at halberd knight.
Halberd knight (with closed helmet) is looking at shield knight.
As seen here:

The armor positions in the room have the sword knight in the top-left of the screen, the halberd knight is at the top-right, the axe knight is at the bottom-left, and the shield knight is at the bottom right.

Once again I believe all this is specifically designed to confuse you, because working backward from my solution I cannot find a connection. To figure out the order you need to move the statutes you have to pay close attention to the way they move when you first enter the room.
As you enter the room each statue will do a subtle little twitch as it moves out from the wall, and these twitches will occur in a specific order. The twitch of the axe knight and the shield knight are the most obvious to spot, but the twitch order I observed was sword knight, shield knight, axe knight, and then the halberd knight. I tried pushing the statues in that order, but all I got was gassed. So, I re-loaded my game and entered the room again. I observed the same twitch order, so this time I moved the statues in the reverse order that they twitched while making sure I pushed each statue fully into place and this solved the puzzle for me.
Edit: My links were not working.
They behave like this:
Sword resets axe, shield, and halberd.
Axe resets shield and sword.
Halberd resets sword and axe.
Shield resets nothing, but puts sword into correct position.
The key things to learn are that sword practically resets the entire puzzle and you never want to interact with it, and shield resets nothing but actually helps you correct the statue which is difficult to deal with. So if you think logically, the solution of halberd->axe->shield makes perfect sense. I guess many people stumbled upon the solution by accident since there aren't that many different combinations to try.
I'm sure this kind of puzzle has a specific name, as I've seen many different variants of it in many games.
- Halberd
- Shield
- Axe
- Shield
. So I'm not getting the clues either. I guess it's just a logic puzzle.I never think twice until I see this topic.
There's a similar puzzle in the first Sonic Adventure. It's in the Robotnik airship in the adventure field, in front of a locked door.
The puzzle is meant to be solved through logic, NOT trial and error.
Order of the Pictures from left to right: Shield, Axe, Sword, Halberd
The Shield is in a Red Heart.
The Axe is in a Black Club.
The Sword is in a Red Diamond.
The Halberd is in a Black Spade.
The suit colors face each other diagonally across, likewise for the actual armor.
As such, the Shield is linked to the Sword and the Axe is linked to the Halberd.
Once I realized this, I solved the puzzle on my first try.
Your solution for the puzzle was:
Halberd, Axe, Shield
Mine was:
Sword, Shield, Halberd, Axe, Shield
(redundant to yours, I know but the Shield automatically puts the Sword in place)
I don't normally post but this was really bugging me and I didn't come across any decent answers anywhere.
