About the origin of those herbs (speculations)

Based on the color variants and its shape / size depicted throughout RE games,
any of you have an idea which real life plant it might have taken loose inspiration from?

Yes, I know trying to apply logic to video games usually doesn't work out for the best, but I'm only curious as to what inspired the RE developers to use herbs as healing items.

Also, there are many ingredients taken from plants for medicinal use. Granted I don't think you can grind up a houseplant and slam your face into it to improve your health. Basically...

Since Resident Evil for PlayStation, we have been forced to heal ourselves time and time again with mysterious "green herbs" that we've found growing randomly. Remarkably enough, Chris Redfield is not smart enough to do chemistry even if the equation is mapped out right in front of him, yet he knows how to mix these herbs and use them in a way beneficial to his health. That's because these green herbs are cannabis, or marijuana, or whatever you wanna call it. Red, blue, and yellow herbs are not their respective colors per se, but rather, figurative properties meant to symbolically represent the varying quality of the drug.

You're probably thinking, "Jallopi, that makes no sense!" Except it does. The entire environment around the player character is nothing more than an intense hallucination experienced on a drug trip. As we all know, marijuana slows one's heart rate down, "mellowing" them out. In the earlier Resident Evil titles, one's health was displayed via heart rate monitor. The more we get hurt, the higher our heart rate gets, and thus the closer we get from the end of our high, bringing us back to reality. Tell me why our heart rate would accelerate as we near our demise (as shown in Resident Evil), when in reality the heart rate slows before death. Death is merely figurative, and a symbolic representation of the end of the trip. Being infected is symbolic of going back to being just a normal part of corporate America (zombies).

Going back to what I said earlier, mysteriously all protagonists know how to use these herbs quickly for their own health, yet some are incapable of subjects like chemistry, even when written out for them. All of the playable characters know how to roll a joint and smoke it.

For me, it was always some kind of ganja, although it should represent any x-herb.
Was(is) simply a fun factor for me.
After all, cannabis is also used as a healing green herb. :D
I think it's a pity that their design has changed so much now.
