worth playing?
considering getting into this series but all of the other games seem to be more modern in terms of controls and the camera. this one looks very dated. is it still worth playing to start the series or should i skip?

Don't skip it just come back to it later cause yeah it's pretty retro. This and 0 are pretty good games once you're familiar with the franchise. 7&8 are a good choice, or 4 or 5 any of them really. Just play Revelations 1&2, 7&8, this and RE0 in order the others don't really matter a lot. RE2 remake would be a good start it's good and has modern controls. If you don't have any yet sometimes there's really good deals on bundles here if you wait for them.

Right now there's 2&3 for $15 that's a pretty good place to start I think.

I bought it without really knowing what to expect.
The graphics are old but have aged quite well.
The biggest issues for me are the limited saves, and the keyboard controls. I swear I can spend 1 minute trying to get through a camera angle change because the controls suddenly change

Thats an issue with alternate controlls. If you stick with the old tank controlls, switching camera angles wont be a problem anymore.
Downside is, that you'll loose agilty since quick turns to the side are not possible with those.
180° turns are there, but slower.
They might feel a bit akwaard at first, but you'll get used to it.

All of the old games already have newer counterparts that will get you the same gameplay experience while being a lot more playable.

- Classic Resident Evil: 0, 1, 2, 3, Code Veronica -----> 7, 2Remake, 3Remake

- Action Resident Evil: 4 -----> 5, Revelations, 8Village, 4Remake (Revelations 2 fits here but it's very focused on being a co-op game)

- RE6 is just a bunch of action tropes from the time it was made, 2012.

Basically, the ones made since 2017 are the smoothests: 7, 8Village, 2Remake, 3Remake, 4Remake

----

This is the best one if you want to try the old classics, it's really good but with problems, the biggest one in my opinion is the fact that this is a game that wants you to travel A LOOOT through the mansion, but makes it as slow as possible.

If you can get used to the controls, I suggest trying both modern and tank controls for awhile to see which you like best, I say check it out. Its fun, challenging, and it has its ohh ♥♥♥♥! moments! definitely play with Jill first tho. Chris's story can be tough.

thanks everyone for replies. it's cheap and apparently pretty short so might as well try it out first, could always refund and move to the newer ones if it's not for me :steamthumbsup:

You'll probably need more than 2 hours to get used to it. You'll likely die and have to restart at least once as you test out how aiming works, if the knife is helpful, etc.
Remember that the difficulties are actually: Normal (top), Easy (middle) and Very Easy (bottom).
It's ok to go for Easy (middle) on your first playthrough so you can get used to things. And play as Jill.
If you're ok with playing for a "long" time without saving and ok with losing progress if you die, go with Normal (top). If you get used to the game too quickly, Easy (middle) indeed becomes pretty easy.

More than worth it OP in fact its the only RE besides 0 I'm interested in. And its not cause of tank controls, I actually prefer resident evil 4 to 2/3. Because 2/3 is just big zombie guys and downgraded atmosphere. RE1, it may have a dated control scheme admittedly but some people love the tank controls as it forces perspective and claustrophobia which actually fits horror more than the 4 setup. Silent Hill 1/2 are also like this and are arguably even more popular than resident evil. If you want to beat probably the single greatest legend of horror gaming history this is well worth it.

I also hold RE4 in high regard but more as a game, RE4 has a great system and graphics. RE4 also has a few good horror segments such as the chainsaw dude. But RE4 felt way to action to be like this one. Most of the enemies are like 2/3 just gore puddles that lacked the actual scares that 1 had. Basically dude explodes, gets turned inside out, and turns into a skeleton bug gore thing. This is the go to for the rest of the series after 1. Why I stopped caring about it after 1/0. But 4 is still a great action game.

This was actually the very first game that had graphics closer to the modern era, there was a few other games (the bouncer, final fantasy 10, tekken tag tournament, soul calibur) but nothing I can even think of at the time came close to this. Its easy for people to think this game is dated 20 years later. But I guess you had to of had it back then to know just how ahead of everything it was.

1、the controls is one of the basic of fear in this game. There are lots of blind spots where you can not see the zombie. Unknown is the most terrible thing.
2、If you don't play I, you will not recognize the protagonist in the posterior plot.
3、I is the higher quality of the series. For example, if you choose not to play the Silent Hill 2 for the controls, you will miss the best Silent Hill.

Silent hill 1? Silent Hill 2 looks beautiful but its a very streamlined and easy game while SH1 was brutal and non stop with the enemy placement. I admit SH2 does horror beautifully and looks almost as good as the RE remake but 1 is still the best imo. I also kind of like the abstract low poly graphics of SH1, more than the original RE's blocky robot look (why this was the first RE I actually really loved).

There's so much in this game that may immediately turn off new players. Here's an incomplete list: The fixed camera angles and clunky controls. A save system restricted to set locations and requiring the use of a consumable item. A million doors that take 7 seconds to load. The extremely small inventory size. The slow firing guns. The cheesiest dialogue and voice acting. The dated graphics (even in this remake).

Yet, it's difficult to fault a lot of these pain points, as many were intentional design decisions chosen to make the game that much scarier. And hot damn, they worked. It's these design elements that have made this game such a classic. It's difficult to describe how the changing camera angles, for example, unequivocally add to the tense atmosphere of the game. It's something you'd have to experience to understand, and there's joy in that experience.

Furthermore, the sense of frustration on player death, losing up to 20 minutes of progress, is always quickly overshadowed by the realization that it'd probably take less than 5 minutes to catch back up. Once you learn the game, it becomes a bit of a playground. There's a sense of progress, not just from progressing through the game, but from understanding and mastering it. It comes to no surprise to me that fans of this game have replayed it several times over. I don't have the time, but I'm almost positive that I'd enjoy a second play-through more than my first.

At the end of the day, I recommend this game with some hesitation. I think it's absolutely worth experiencing this piece of gaming history. However, if you're a first time player, or not specifically fan of survival horror, my advice is: go easy on yourself. Play on Very Easy or Easy. Have a walkthrough open if you need to. Do not give up for at least the first two hours. And, for God's sake, play with the Door Skip Mod on.
