En realidad es el remake del primero, que salió para PS1 en 1996, pero la historia general y base de gameplay se mantiene.
Luego de RE(1), lo ideal para seguir la cronología es jugar RE2, 3, Code Veronica, en algún punto jugar RE0 (precuela a RE1, pero se hizo después). Luego RE4, Revelations, RE5, Revelations 2, RE6, RE7, y Village.

Although my honest advice is to start with Resident Evil to see if you like it.
The difficulty of these games are all around equal so it should not be a factor.
I wont include Umbrella Chronicles in there since it rehashes some stuff and it adds a little to the story overall but it isn't needed for the complete experience.
You can always play them out of order but the story might confuse you with certain characters. There is enough game play variation between the titles to keep you interested.
