I didn't get the closet key for beating the game the first time?

Do I have to beat it twice or something? It's been years since I've done it.

I think if you play on very easy or easy(which is I or II, III is normal) you don't get any unlocks. Im not sure though because I never played that difficulty.

You have to either:
A) Clear the game with good ending
B) Clear the game with bad ending but don't discard any key
Not sure if 'B' works here or it was just for the PSX version.

Good ending is save your partner and the mansion blows up right?

Yes. Once the screen telling you that you unlocked the closet key, just start the game from the same save file (not new game) and the key should be in the item box.
