If you play as Chris you will have more HP but only 6 item slots whereas if you play as Jill you will have less HP but 8 item slots. I'd say play as Jill first since I feel like her playthrough is more beginner-friendly but choose whichever you feel is more right for you. Definitely try both though and see if you can complete both of them!

Jill is easier for a blind playthrough.

Chris is easier for hard mode and if you are familiar with the game.

*Mild “spoilers” for anyone that wants to go in blind*

Chris
  • 6 Inventory Slots
  • Has more Health
  • Has lighter (for burning zombies, kinda useless otherwise)
  • Gets the Assault Shotgun Later
  • Gets Flamethrower (not very good)
  • Has flash grenades as defense items (Instant Kill)
  • Has Rebecca as a partner (weaker plot than Jill and Barry’s)
Jill
  • 8 Inventory Slots
  • Slightly less health
  • Has lockpick (Chris must instead look for keys)
  • Gets early Assault Shotgun
  • Gets Grenade Launcher with 3 different ammunition types (real sh**)
  • Has the stun gun and batteries as defense items
  • Has Barry as a partner (Jill Sandwich anyone?)

As you can probably tell, Jill’s playthrough is kind of an “easy mode” in and of itself but I highly recommend anyone to play with her for their first playthrough. Her story scenarios also end up being far more interesting than Chris and Rebecca’s.

I preferred Jill's story in the original RE, most of all because you had more possible encounters with Barry over the course of a single playthrough than Chris did with Rebecca, but in the Remake the amount of scenes is pretty even. And they made Jill a lot dumber in the Remake.

All you gotta say is about the health difference and inventory slots. All this other stuff is spoiler.

If this is your first Resident Evil it's a great one to start on. The main differences are inventory, unique item, health and early game (Story elements too). Chris has more health than Jill but only has 6 items slots with his unique item being a lighter. Jill has 8 item slots and her unique item is a lock pick which gives her access to more rooms in the early game sooner than Chris.

Jill's over all is the easier of the two but there's no wrong answer here. I'd recommend Jill first though as that will feel like a more natural difficulty curve.

You could find out about most of this stuff by playing each character for less than an hour. It’s not like I’m spoiling major plot elements, which play out similarly between the two anyway.

I’m just trying to help anyone who may not know that Chris may offer a more challenging experience.

Chris takes hits and handles combat better in general, but Jill has more inventory space (which means less backtracking needed), gets more free help at certain points, and even an extra weapon.

So Jill is more suitable for a first playthrough. Chris' advantages are harder to notice at first, although they will come in handy in following playthroughs (especially challenge runs).

Jill's lower HP shouldn't be an issue since the highest difficulty available on a first playthrough is Normal (Hard must to be unlocked), while Chris' smaller inventory can be a pain the first time.

Also, Chris' grenades are extremely useful if you want to kill zombies for good and without wasting ammunition, so you don't need to constantly backtrack to refill your fuel canteen.

Jill is easier for a first time through (and, IMO, has the more enjoyable campaign overall). Item management is also a big factor in this game and Jill has two extra item slots over Chris and she also possesses a lockpick on her person at all times to unlock simple door whereas Chris needs to collect a finite item called "old keys" (which also take up an inventory slot).
