Original was the true story. The remastered was adjusted to accommodate later features... which made the game longer... but not in a good way. Lots of things in the remastered make no sense, like the laboratory looks Victorian and dirty... meaning it would be useless as a lab as everything would get contaminated.
Also, the music and sounds are better in the original.
The new version has much better graphics and voice acting... but that is it. The problem with the original is it's now so old (1st Generation 3D)... so unless you played it on release, it will feel bad now.
If you never played the original... it's now a bit late and you should just get the new one.
So, unless you have nostalgia for PS1 graphics or the infamous voice acting of the original, or you just don't like the Crimson Head addition in the Remake, there's basically no reason to play the original over this one, as it's the same experience at its core but enhanced in almost every way.
You forgot to add the whole "Lisa" addition... A entire addition to the original game that felt unnecessary and added purely to introduce the concept of additional lore that came after the original Nemesis. Same with the additional Crimson "Boss". They added the concept of folk lore being a big part to the original... but the original was more based on a rich modern medical corporation. The main culprits of RE1, RE2, RE: NEMESIS.
Many people liked the change in lore, many did not.
That addition you mention didn't change the story though. You have a new enemy and some background lore about it, but at the end whether that enemy existed or not is irrelevant when looking at the big picture and has no actual impact on the overall story or the characters' canonical fate.
It's just an addition, not a plot-shaking change. Story-wise it's telling you the same story from the original, just with somewhat deeper background lore.
Oh it is and that's why i said if people have not played the original they should just play the remake. My problem with it... is its literately re writing the lore, which will split the original community. It leads to further insults towards the original direction of the games... Like RE3 remake... They had to sacrifice locations, monsters, features, monsters and lore. To introduce Splitting head monsters, black goo, Different parasite mutations that are later found in the series and a few hints to other lore.
The originals in every form should of just been upgraded in technology and design when remade... that's it. I think playing with story and lore is a very bad idea.
REmake has way more features and is probably the more complete game, but it lost a bit of that charm the original had.
Only if one wants to play Aranged Mode of the Director's version, otherwise the PC version is superior by far, decent resolution 800x600 (or even the 1024x768 for the rare UK edition) vs the PS1's 640×480, PC also has ALOT of mod support for it, including the incredible Barry's and Wesker's Mods :D
Get yourself Nglide or one of the fan patches and the game should run on PC with no problems.
I suggest you watch both of them. You might need a VHS player to watch the earlier one, but it's worth it.
