It made them easier for me to play and get immersed and involved in.
Less so with the newer games, they've kind of gone off the deep end a little bit, grabbing up anything they can for more drama and "awesome" shock value. Some of the things created in them have been pretty cool, but a lot of it has been incredibly whacky and really hard to do anything but laugh at. Never really been a fan of the big massive uberhuge boss monsters, especially when they're handled like in Resident Evil 6, lol.
Add to the fact the older games had a much better emphasis on recognisable sounds and such, and it's very "habit forming" within your memory and hard to forget. You could play the sound of a door opening to me or a zombie moaning and shuffling around from REmake2 and I would likely not recognise it but if you played the same sounds from the OG RE games I would certainly instantly know and recognise them. I also remember the haunting and sombre background ambience from Resident Evil 2 and 3, the wailing and the moaning, with the crows and the wind howling, very haunting and on point for a dead city.
They play completely differently though so I can't really say that the older games are "better" or the newer games are "worse" without it being anything more of an opinion though, really. I greatly prefer the original games and I feel that those captured the spirit of what Resident Evil was the most, and it has the most solid foundation from a story and history standpoint...but generally speaking, most of the games have been fun in their own way.
It's always been interesting to me how bright and colourful the OG games were but still managed to be a horror game, when these days most horror games use boring mechanics like darkness, claustrophobic FOVs and jumpscapes to add artificial tension and horror to the game. It's just an opinion I guess, but I prefer strong OSTs and well defined sound effects over the quiet "darkness and suspense until jump scare" mechanics as a whole.
Special mention has to go towards the Outbreak games, I think the firearms in those games were the best of any Resident Evil game to date in terms of how they were presented, with powerful and loud sounding gunshots and bright muzzle flashes when firing, well pronounced shell casing sounds and bullet impacts on zombies. I've been waiting for Capcom to make a Resident Evil game with gun effects similar to the Outbreak games but it never happens, lol.
So unless you have a nostalgia for PS1 graphics or terrible voice acting, I don't think so. If all of the PS1 RE games had a remake like this one, I personally wouldn't see any reason to go back to the originals.
I will admit Remake looks a lot better but the originals just hit the spot for me, Cheesy acting and all
this game is the perfect example of what a REMAKE should aim to be. i cant name a single thing i would do better (aside like makeing door loading scenes optional with an option maybe) for this remake. it absolutly nailed it. stayed true to the original as much as possible while also adding neat and nasty suprises and additons aswell.
First of all, the characters move much faster in the original, and shooting stuff/popping heads feels more satisfying which I guess you could argue is not the point but I always loved the early classic titles mix of adventure puzzle gameplay and Capcom's arcade action sensibilities which were probably more pronounced in RE2 and 3 though.
There are also way more enemies in the original, especially when playing as Chris. They really scaled down the number of enemies due to the crimson head mechanic but once you've played through the game and now what to do during your next run, these barely exist. The regular enemies in the OG however are always there to greet you on your next run.
Also, the original has more branching paths and alternate scenes (Very different and better ways for Barry to die than the Remake, two different ways to meet Rebecca etc.) In the REmake they also changed Jill's campaign's story for the worse and made her dumber.
More subjective of a take but I also prefer the OG's electronic music compared to the more ambient sounding one in the REmake but to be fair, the old music would not really fit the REmake's new look.
And of course there's the voice acting...if the REmake's voice acting was at least good, that'd be something but it's still pretty horrible, just boring bad instead of funny bad.
RE2 and RE3 remake are both vastly inferior to their originals: cut weapons, areas, story, monsters, soundtrack ( especially in RE2 remake ) etc... gameplay is ok tho and doesn't feel that much like an action game ( unlike that overrated RE4 ) despite having a 3rd person over the shoulder camera.
Rebirth is a straight upgrade from RE1, unless you miss the "so bad it's funny" voice acting of the original
don't forget outbreaks, 0 and code veronica, even if they came up on later generation
Though Instead of one continuous scenario, it's broken up in to multiple thematic chunks. A lot like Left 4 Dead if you're familiar with that.
