Which version should I play first?
I plan on playing both this and the original psx version, but which would be better for my first playthrough?

I'd go with the original and then the remake to see what's changed.

i would say get the directors cut from the original re 1 and play it first the dc version has also a arranged hard mode that has various new camera angles and changed item locations and more monsters added

Great input friends, sounds like the Director's Cut will be the way to go for the first run!

Make sure to get the regular Directors Cut, not the Dual Shock Edition. OST in the normal Directors Cut is way better than whatever the hell they produced for the Dual Shock version.

Good to know, gotta have that good ost for sure

yea some tracks are ok but the rest of it is mostly tracks that feel like an acordion has been trown down the stairs and recordd it

also the directors cut has aim assit while the original 1996 re 1 non dc version has no aim assist

That does sound important. I tried the Wii version a very long time ago at a friends tbh, and I remember the aiming to be quite difficult.

Aim assist is not really new to the DC though, but rather, it was removed from the original western release. And enemies were made stronger.

The DC's difficulty and inclusion of auto-aim is in line with the original japanese version of the game.

definitely original a lot of the changes in remake bank on you being familiar with that game or at least some of the classics in order to catch you off guard. id be willing to bet most experienced RE players when reaching REmake still had to do a restart after learning some twists the game had.

restarts for resource mismanagement in survival horror games is common but REmake causes it in some genuinely devious ways. This was one of the last and best in the genre and it was incredibly innovative.

Choose Original or Directors Cut version, because they have original ambient music.
Stay away from DualShock version - it have replaced to ♥♥♥♥♥♥ music.
