Dont fight the first zombie right away. He's extra tough and would just eat away your ammo (and then you). Just leave the hallway and go back to Barry (or the main hall, if you are playing as Chris).
He wont be in your way when you come back the second time anyway and when you finaly need to go past by him, you should have enough ammo and/or stronger weapons to deal with him.
And if thats for some reason not the case, you can either dodge him or just take the hit. Its not like he's going to kill you in one strike (as long as you are not in "Danger"- condition).

Maybe because games were IQ check back there and you just failed one. How hard it can be to realise that you have to run away from it?

Just started playing and was also feeling weird. Well, before that my only RE was RE4 (which is more action focused), and originally I come from Silent Hill series (where its no problem).
