I used to save after I reached the court yard or roughly reached halfway, just before the final part of the game. If you're just starting out save around every hour or so. Just remember you don't need to carry ink ribbons with you, dump them in storage, they're usually near to typewriters if you need more.
Once you get used to the game you won't need to save at all.
It's usually a good idea to have multiple saves just in case you mess up & end up low on supplies.
Just save every 30 minutes and you will be fine, But save only if you made some progress. If you wandered aimlessly for 2 hours and got bitten 10 times while wasting all healing items and ammo just to find key item 5 minutes away from a save point than maybe just redo that section in 5 minutes and then save,
Do not overwrite unless you have to.
PS
Just my suggestion, you may want to save after getting certain items.
The first time you find a save room.
The 4 mansion keys.
The metal object in Spencer's room, before you save Rebecca.
Before you save Richard.
You only need multiple saves in the mansion, the residence, the tunnel and the lab are linear, you can just replay if you die.
