I think I'm genuinely stuck?
Played 8 hours of the game so far and though I thought I wouldn't like it much, I'm actually really enjoying it. Or I was.

I've spent over an hour now trying to figure out how to progress and for the first time had to give up and look at a walkthrough, but I couldn't find my solution there either.

I've got three of the masks. The only clear objective I can see I have now is the kill the fountain plant.

I know now, thanks to a walkthrough, that the herbicide to kill that plant is behind one of the 'old key' doors. The only one I haven't unlocked.

It also seems that the only old key I don't have is in the kitchen in the basement, and I don't see how I can get there.

I've now wasted quite a lot of ammo, killing zombies I could have avoided just to clear every room of items (usually just herbs) in the vain hope that there might be something I can use.

I'm really hoping I'm just being dense here and that someone can provide the solution, because I used the last old key some time ago and frankly I'm not willing to redo all that because of bad game design.

Thanks a bunch. If need more info, I'm willing to provide.

first off : its impossible to get stuck due to items in this game. simply impossible.

2nd your solution is the sword key which you still have somewhere as the game doesnt allow you to get rid of it until ALL doors it gates are opened.

you can simply go to the kitchen from that very first zombie encounter corridor and open the door below the stairs with the sword key. grab the old key. rest is obivious.

just always remember : you CANNOT get stuck. you can have a hard time but getting stuck is impossible unless your character falls trough the floor or the graphics for some super odd 1:10000 chance occurance.

if it seems youre stuck due to missing an item you simply havent checked all your options yet. quite simple.

In the Remake, Chris can enter the basement kitchen with the first Mansion key you can get (the one you find inside the Book of Curses) so nothing stops you from going there and grab the Old Key you need. Afaik there's really no way to "lock" your game, other than playing with Chris on Very Easy and hoarding every possible item before picking up the Arrow Head.

and even the very easy thing is impossible as you could just use the herbs and ammo up to free up space. like you said its impossible to get locked up.

i know i tryed a run once to see if i COULD lock myself up somehow. turns out you cannot. the devs really tought about everything regarding this.

Thanks guys, this is really good to know. I guess I'm just an idiot. Instead of looking for something I don't have, I need to looks at the things I do have. I was just paranoid because I never know with these older games.

doesnt mean youre an idiot dude. you just where not curious enough. always be curious. if it seems youre missing something try to CHECK every single odd item you have lying around sometimes that leads to a solution or atleast a clue. an item might seem useless/not needed at first but things can change quickly if you take it somewhere or try to combine it with something else.

the same is true for ammo. even if youre out of ammo youre not stuck at all in like 95% of cases as only FOUR enemies in the WHOLE game need to be actually killed to progress. and only 2 of them are bosses.

Is it even possible to do that with chris on very easy? I mean ı think you can waste ink ribbons to free up space.

This is the worst case scenario you can get with Chris before getting the Arrow item(i did the testing some years ago):

Very easy difficulty in which the game gives you 6 ink ribbons in a single pick up action. In that situation the player will have to waste the handgun bullets or save the game 6 times in order to free one slot for the Arrow item. You can't use any inventory chest or make progress without getting the Arrow item first

It is indeed impossible to get stuck (in theory) because you can simply waste those items. But a newcomer in that situation would likely restart the game by thinking that he screwd up beyond repair.

Yeah, also for a newcomer it would be possible to pick up the Emblem from the dinning room early and not knowing it can be placed back for later. But technically there's no real way to get stuck and unable to progress. As Nerevar said, devs surely tested it so that couldn't happen.

As someone who's playing for the first time and getting used to all the things you gotta learn to play this game I found this super helpful, my inventory was exactly the same and I obviously didn't want to waste all the ink ribbons so I decided to just start again from my previous save.
