Used up about 15-18 ink ribbons so far (normal difficulty) am I screwed?

First time playing this game, never played the original.
Ive got the armor key and cleared what I feel like is most doors with it.
Last room I reached was the fountain place with the tentacles slapping you when you get close.
I have no ink ribbons at the moment and kind of lost. Have I saved too many times? I'm not sure how far into the game am I, how far from the end I am etc. Is it worth carrying on? Not sure I can bare restarting after all that progress.

there is over 30 ink ribbons in total on normal if i remember right.

but jesus. 18 saves at that point while not even haveing done the first 3rd of the game yet? did you save every single enemy or room or what?

i normally save about 4 times in that part of the game. if youre new i would say 10 is resonable still. but 18? jesus. thats nearly every ink ribbon that you can currently access i think.
also if you have done all armor key doors the game will ask if you want to discard that key. if it hasnt done that you missed a door 100%.

out of my head (not sure which are on normal and which are on hard anymore)

3 in dining room.
3 in saveroom below stairs.
3 in shotgun room.
3 in broken shotgun room in a drawer.
3 in bedroom near windcrest room.
3 more somewhere. i forgot where sorry.

i think thats all the ones you can reach before getting the stone and metal object.

so youre out of saves for awhile probaly. or atleast very close to beeing out of saves.

once you get the stone and metal object and leave the main house you can find more again. 3 in the shack.
3 in the residence saveroom. and 3 more before the boss there i think?

and then another 6 or so in mainhouse later once you get helm key to open the remaining doors.

but yeah. you definitly save way too often for normal difficulty dude. slow it down. by about half i would say.

for the first section i suggest this for a new player :

gamestart----> get sword key. this a fixed route and there is no way around it. therefore no reaosn to save here at all. clear waste as this part doesnt even take 15 minutes do to once you know where the golden arrow is.

use swordkey to access infamous dog corridor.

get to first box room (snag chemical and small key (if chris) or shotgun via barry (if jill) while going there. basicly no risk in this as there is no enemies in the way till youre right next to the saveroom with the box (the dogs outside dont jump over the fence if you hurry up to get chemical)

once you arrive at first box room----> perform 1st save. perfect time to do one so you dont have to start all over if something goes wrong.

get armor key------> next save.

start collecting death masks. once you have atleast 2. ---> save. (avoid snake one)

once you have all death masks besides the snake one ---> save (in case of poisen nonsense or dieing to snake)

get snake mask. -----> save.

go kill elder crimson-----> save again.

house 1 : COMPLETE. total amount of saves done : 6. and you where pretty save most the time as you wouldnt have to redo much if you die somewhere or messup hard.

past this point its pretty obivious when to safe as its more linear to come accross the typewriter. and you also have plenty saves left over till you find even more on top. past that point excessive saveing is needed to run out.

if you MUST save this often as you just did to feel safe then go play very easy. ink ribbon amount more than DOUBLES. kinda ruins the experience tough as zombies go down so easy and you will be swimming in ammo.

You saved way too much considering how little progress you've actually done.

If you're playing on Normal, there should be 30 ink ribbons for the whole game. But using more than 10 before even leaving the mansion for the first time is pretty excessive, considering that's still below half of the game.

Damn that sucks I thought I was way further, for some reason I thought the 3 keys sorta indicated progress, with 2nd key being around the mid way point and last key being the end game, i guess I overestimated how far Ive gotten, I think time went by really slowly when I was playing so I felt I did more than I actually did, especially with running around the mansion so much finding doors Ive missed and being lost.

I hope I can still finish it with the whatever number of ink ribbons I have left to find, it's a bit rough at the moment with none left and I find combat to be generally difficult, most the times I cant kill a zombie without getting hit, but I like the challenge, just not used to having limited saves so I shouldve been more frugal with it.

I'm probably gonna go on it now to try make more progress

its still duable but you gotta be more careful. avoiding dmg from zombies is rather easy thanks to defense items beeing everywhere on normal mode. just hold shotgun upwards. wait for zombie to get close. fire. watch head explode 50% the time. 1 shot = 1 permadeath zombie.

and dont oversave again once you reach the shack. i wouldnt save till you reach the residence saveroom with these next 3 you get.

@Nerevar, would you know how far I am from some ink ribbons, I've gone through like 3 key items and collected 2/4 of the death masks since my last save, I have no healing items and about 9 assault shotgun shells, I havent killed the snake, ran out, felt it was too risky and I really need to save, getting scary now, do you know how far I am from the closest one? I feel like it's been forever

youre still a good ways off if you really saved 18 times dude. you cannot safe like i explained to you in length till you defeat elder crimson and obtain the stone and metal object. this requires all 4 death masks. if you struggle too much start over from your first save (never override old saves until youre out of saveslots ever so you can fallback to older save in case you get stuck or messup) or simply start over.

you really arent too far into the game yet believe me. it takes not even 2 hours to get back to where you are. and its MUCH MUCH faster for you now that you know where the items are and which enemies you can safely ignore.

as for the snake do you play as chris or as jill? if jill then richard should help you out and you get a free 10 round shotgun which is better in every way than the normal one. chris doesnt get this till a bit later. (only if you saved richard from the poisen in time)

also veteran tip : there is no need to kill the snake (aside getting the extra shotgun with jill then you must hit it a few times to trigger the gun to drop) at all for the mask. you can just bumrush in and snag the mask and leave the room. done. the snake fight is purely optional and imo a waste of ammo unless you can get the shotgun from richard (its loaded with 10 shots which is always worth it).

there is also 6 shotgun rounds in the snake room on the tables or whatever to your right when you enter in the corner. they are hard to spot. should be there on normal still if you need some.

just make sure the snake doesnt bite you. high chance of poisen and then you gotta walk all the way to the serum room just to cure it at this point.

elder cirmson tough? needs to be killed. one of the few enemies you MUST kill no matter what. as you cannot get out of his room until he is dead due to a script. but a few shotgun blasts or grenades (jill only) will finish him off nicely. or blow his head off with shotgun. instakill but not 100% save to do.

I have the mask from the graveyard area and the snake room, (nose and mouth) i also have the shotgun, richard helped me then died yeah, i have no healing items though and i dont know where the other 2 masks are, theres a bunch of crimson heads in the right wing i think where the zombie in the bathtub was, like 4 jumped through the windows and i dont think i can get through them without dying, so yeah, if the masks are there, im screwed

then there might be 1 more pack of ribbons somewhere. but i dont know which ones you have. i listed the ones i remembered in my first post.

hope you picked up richards shotgun otherwise you should do so despite snake beeing there. it stays on the ground after he is easten in cutscene. once old shotgun is empty toss in box and forget it exists. only use richards shotgun for rest of game due to higher capacity.

the piano room doesnt contain a death mask o.O what are you talking about. the piano is purely for getting to the snake room.

4 masks :

1 snake.
2 box inside knight room puzzle. can be opened by examineing it carefully.
3 inside plant room (requires chemical to kill. chemical is found outside near small bath room in east wing)
4. found on graveyard after sloveing the picture color puzzle inside crow room. opens shortcut to graveyard with jill via lockpick and small key on chris. the armor key opens this door.

Okay I got snake, I got the knight room box but cant open it for some reason, must be missing something, i know where the chemical is, theres a dog in the way though, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the gods will ruin me and i got the graveyard one

you can open the box by itself. it doesnt need anything extra. youre not missing an item. youre doing it wrong. pay attention to the box design and read what it says aswell. you only need to press the right 2 switches on it.

so youre missing the one from plant room only. so now you know what you must do. no choice. get chemical ----> kill plant (DO NOT TURN THE LEVER THE WRONG way or youll destroy FIVE green herbs at once which it seems like you have a serious need for) in order to make sure which direction to turn lever dont use chemical at first and watch where the water comes out first (this wont do anything itself) and remember that setting. then use chemical on waterpump and turn lever so it kills plant. then collect herbs in case of need and mask.

go to graveyard. open box. get 4th mask.

kill elder. use grenade launcher if jill. ends him in 3 shots.

leave house via the door near color puzzle room with crows. use new object to unlock door at end of corridor outside. head trough small door (avoid twin doors for now). follow path and slove easy riddle (only crows on graveyard (TAKE WINDCREST WITH YOU AT ALL COSTS. there is SOMETHING you can find on the graveyard. you WANT that something believe me ^^ its optional but you WILL want it) follow path fruther to find shack. shack contains itembox and SHOULD contain 3 ink ribbons if i remember it right. otherwise you need to progress all the way to residence saveroom (trough twindoors once you get crank). lots of dogs and something special in the way sadly. bring your herbs if this happens.

residence saveroom contains 3 ribbons 100%.
