Chris has less room, but he is strong and can take more hits.
Jill has more room, but can take less hits.
Barry helps Jill a lot
Rebecca helps Chris sometimes.
It has a lot to do with preference, if you think you're going to get hit a lot, Chris is better. If you think you're going to need more room for items and health, go with Jill.
Personally I think Jill is a better choice for a start.
Jill is definitely the easier of the two campaigns from what I remember (though I've never finished the remake, that's definitely how it was in the original).
So you can leave Chris for your Hard playthrough. Once you know more or less what you're doing you won't miss the two extra slots that much.
