My little brother says otherwise.

A good example of action games that sucessfully tie into the Actual 'role play' part of role playing would be Fallout, glitchy engine aside. Whether you picked out an idiot character or brainiac or a guy who just shot everything till it stopped moving, People would react differently to you, And you found yourself BEING your character, Getting into your own story as you went.

That's sort of what I meant above by,

There is no de-facto role playing except that which is brought in by the players themselves.

People in here DO play in character I've seen, But it's rare.. Usually restricted to club chat but for the most part it's a grind-to-build game with some minor npc interaction. Fun, Nontheless but calling it an RPG bugs me..

you became an archer you couldnt just rush into battle and last near as long as a knight.

So since Team Fortress two had classes, If I picked the spy I'm role playing now? What is my motivation? Did the heavy sit on my hat? Did the scout draw me having relations with the Eiffel tower? Do tell me.."

The actual clasification would be a MMO sandbox, cause you can do when you want when you want. RPG elemants exist as in leveling up your character and that. However rules, history and everything like that per character is all player based, rumers if you will, so that isn't really a full RPG as that would have story as to why that character is there doing what they are doing. It's an MMO sandbox that you can level up your character and equipment ect. sorry for going on but yeah, it's not an RPG.

I can conclude from all this discussion, that this is in-fact an MMORPG.

No i wouldn't. There is no role to be played. At best its an Action RPG akin to Diablo, where your entire RPG aspect is slaying monsters and finding better loot. And i honestly don't even consider those RPGs, because RPG to me is a narrative driven game in which you play a Role. Its not just hack&slay with a bit of level up.

If you want to get really stringent on the whole thing, then yeah, i suppose its an RPG because you level up and have stats. But considering the level up is pointless beyond lvl 5, as is the level increase in general beyond level 5. The only real change seems to be at level 10 where it adds shadow arenas to the game. Otherwise it basically plays no much of a role if you go play in a lvl 5 instance or in a level 10 or level 20 instance.

Its a lackluster Action RPG, if you want to go by Videogame Genre terms. I wouldn't call it an RPG though, there is no story, there is nothing really in terms of role playing. And it does a terrible job at the Action RPG thanks to lack of enemy variety, or even just class skills. I mean.. if there would at least be some choice or skills would change depending on which weapon you use or any sort of variety. What you did at level 5 is what you'll do for the rest of your life playing that class. No change in tactics, no change in skills. All you do is add an arbitary number to your stats and fight the same monsters with more HP.

I think you've hit this on the head there!

RPG=Role Playing Game.
In an RPG you play a character role in a story.
Trove has no story and your not a character, your a toon so no trove is not an RPG its an MMO.

To be honest, I share your opinion, but keep in mind that definitions change with the people. I tend to get frustrated when people throw around "MMO" loosely or use "lag" or "noob" with the "wrong" meaning... but in the end it comes down to the fact that a lot of people not knowing the old definition are changing the definition itself gradually.

Give it a generation and some words will have their meaning changed completely. Like the word "gay" for example. It used to mean colourful or happy in the 19th century, then homosexual in the 20th and now everything that isn't to some peoples' liking is called "gay" and screw the original meaning because autism. Yes, and that was intentionally dumb.

Genres are especially susceptible to changing definition compared to other words.

In general, I've observed that one cannot tell people "no, you are wrong because of this fact" and at the same time expect them to actually come around to one's way of thinking anymore. They get so easily offended or take a stubborn approach to a subject and nothing one does or says will change that. So yes, in the end it's opinion. You may not like it and I certainly don't either, but that's the way it tends to go.
Of course then there's people presenting their opinion by devaluing others and that's a good enough reason to actually be stubborn and stop listening for many people...

Anyways, I just fear the implications of this watering-down of definitions... what will make a good RPG in a decade or so?

...yeah. That would go off-topic in a major way so I'll just stop right here.
Well if the definition changes in the next 10 years so be it, but the definition I posted here is not an opinion, its a long developed universal definition made by comparing tons of different games and rpg elements and what exactly makes one an rpg.
If you really want to read the whole artical about it then here ya go:
http://sinisterdesign.net/what-makes-an-rpg-an-rpg-a-universal-definition/
As I said, I share your view.

But as you can observe, people still have a different opinion. Doesn't matter if it's fact what you posted or not. (It is.)

That's what I was trying to say.
