Would you consider Trove an RPG?
My little brother says otherwise.

It's RPG/Faction/MMO atleast for me.
Vyvyvn 2015 年 7 月 30 日 上午 6:14
There is no de-facto role playing except that which is brought in by the players themselves. Therefore, It is not.

Also included in other games. Borderlands for example. Or Firefall. Also, what quests? Challenges or tutorial milestones or even badges for that matter are not quests.

It's not much of an RPG. Character stats are minimal, there isn't any real role-playing going on. Decision-making is pretty much non-existant and there's really nothing to NPC interaction. Doesn't even have any noteworthy dialogues.

Trove is what it is for better or worse, but a true RPG it is not. Neither was any of the games it took obvious inspiration from (Cube World, Minecraft) so I guess it's okay that way.

Maybe for you it is and that's fine.

It's really not much of that either for me. I mean it really tries to with the Diablo-esque loot system, but that alone does not make it an ARPG. (The point that it's really simplistic aside.) The class and skill system is also a bit bare-bones for any role-playing game I know of. I think it's more like an Action-Adventure with building.

But yeah, opinions. In the end anyone can define anything as anything for themselves. So if someone tells you it's an RPG, that's pretty much either their own opinion or someone else's they've heard/read. Same for people telling you it's not. Some may have better arguments than others but in the end it's what you think it is (for you).

you do not role play in Trove . You create your chareter and therefore it is a MMO
~xXMuffinXx~ 2015 年 7 月 30 日 上午 8:03
For me,an RPG has an actual story...so no
Orpheus 2015 年 7 月 30 日 上午 9:10
It's an RPG, yes.
Richard Jokes 2015 年 7 月 30 日 上午 11:19
RPG usually builds a story, so yeah I would say that this isn't an RPG. Its a grindfest. A mindless grindfest.
Sterling 2015 年 7 月 30 日 上午 11:24
There are some REALLY crappy RPGs that don't even show a decent story. I can't say that Trove is definetly an RPG, but it is a G.

Not about opinion, a game is a RPG if it features player-driven development of a persistent character or characters via the making of consequential choices.
To be honest, I share your opinion, but keep in mind that definitions change with the people. I tend to get frustrated when people throw around "MMO" loosely or use "lag" or "noob" with the "wrong" meaning... but in the end it comes down to the fact that a lot of people not knowing the old definition are changing the definition itself gradually.

Give it a generation and some words will have their meaning changed completely. Like the word "gay" for example. It used to mean colourful or happy in the 19th century, then homosexual in the 20th and now everything that isn't to some peoples' liking is called "gay" and screw the original meaning because autism. Yes, and that was intentionally dumb.

Genres are especially susceptible to changing definition compared to other words.

In general, I've observed that one cannot tell people "no, you are wrong because of this fact" and at the same time expect them to actually come around to one's way of thinking anymore. They get so easily offended or take a stubborn approach to a subject and nothing one does or says will change that. So yes, in the end it's opinion. You may not like it and I certainly don't either, but that's the way it tends to go.
Of course then there's people presenting their opinion by devaluing others and that's a good enough reason to actually be stubborn and stop listening for many people...

Anyways, I just fear the implications of this watering-down of definitions... what will make a good RPG in a decade or so?

...yeah. That would go off-topic in a major way so I'll just stop right here.
Sterling 2015 年 7 月 30 日 下午 12:35
Considering the point of view of character development and customization, this is an RPG. Considering "RPG" literally, there is no roleplaying in this game (from what I saw, at least. Correct me if I'm wrong), so it isn't an RPG.
