Do I really need a glyph account?
I just want to play with my steam account.

Did you try logging in with steam?
Did it fail?
Was it impossible for you to get in with just a steam account?
Then yes you really need a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ glyph account.

Steam only launches Glyph launcher.

Trove was originally on the Glyph launcher, just like some other games out there, some games were never originally platform on Steam.

Steam just seems useful for counting your hours if that really what matters to you but yes, you need a glyph account to play Trion World's games.

It seems better that way because if you delete Trove on steam, it doesn't matter, your account is saved under Glyph and not Trove itself. Although some people are against that but whatever, not my problem.

I'm sure it's possible to have either one as a login, just like how robocraft did exactly that.

Isn't that what cloud save is for?

Glyph is the underlying system built into all Trion Worlds games. It allows us to patch all of our games in one easy interface and is the system that runs purchases in all of our games as well. It's very deeply integrated into everything we do.

Since our games are available separate from Steam, having those systems in place are extremely important. When the game is installed via Steam the version of Glyph used is substantially smaller and just allows players to access our game servers.

I can definitely appreciate not wanting to have to sign in to multiple accounts, but with an MMO with a lot of backend integration that needs to be managed simply, having our own infrastructure for that is vital.
