Because this is the first GEM game set in the present day there is no native support for the more advanced, current day technologies that many of the vehicles come equipped with.
By this I mean stuff like composite/spaced/reactive armours, tandem-charges, autoloaders, countermeasure, modern optics etc
Unfortunately this is what makes many contemporary vehicles unique and sets them apart from one another.
Talking purely about armour... Men of War games started with WW2, where tanks had cast/rolled steel armour, therefore there is no proper simulation for current day composite armours, HEAT penetration mechanics and such.
M1 Abrams has the same type of "armour" (with just higher values) as BTR-80, although IRL the latter only has RHA whilst the Abrams uses an advanced mix of modern composites.
I think some of these modern systems really need to be worked on and added (especially armour/penetration, reactive tiles and countermeasures) otherwise whats the point of adding something like the T-14 Armata or T-90 if under the hood they're just identical copies of their NATO counterparts and don't actually have use of their well-known real life technology.
Currently the vehicles look unique but apart from that they're only actually different by their slightly adjusted armour and weapon values which still rely on the (fairly disliked?) "random number system". I think thats what people are really referring to when they call the game a "reskin".
Hopefully devs can and will prioritise some new mechanics for vehicles as it will REALLY set the game apart, take the game properly into the modern era plus make vehicles feel interesting, authentic and more unique.
See what I'm saying?
Devs do read everything we post here even if they don't join the dicussion.
They're most likely already aware of the issues (i.e. vehicles lacking modern systems and armour) and by the sounds of the feature vote they've already decided to act on it.
First time they answered "thank you for your question we shall look into it"? :P
Though im not sure people would like an honest "until we rewrite the engine for a sh@tton of money the generalised armour system with RNG damage states will remain, maybe well tweak it a bit if we can" :D
