Syncerror (dev of Quake Champions) said on discord that Q6 was just a joke for that video and there is currently no new quake game being made.
let's make a blatant teaser for Q6 and now lets pretend it was just a joke, sure.. why not
I don't expect Q6 to come out anytime soon, but let's not forget, Machine Games is stocking up on staff and opening a second studio
would expect a Q6 announcement earliest 2027 anyway
Imo you hit the nail on the head and this is the biggest impediment to a new Quake campaign experience. There's just not much other than setting to differentiate Quake from Doom now, unlike when Quake was new.
Granted, that doesn't have to be a horrible thing necessarily. I felt like Quake 4 was basically just Doom 3 but with Strogg instead of demons, and was if anything even scarier as a result. So it can work. But I don't think I'm a good representation of the general audience, and there's just not much about Quake anymore that sets it apart from modern Doom games.
Quake back in the day was the next engine from Id + jumping and speed. Modern Doom is the next engine from Id + jumping and speed. (Or, it was until TDA, which sounds like they intend to de-emphasize verticality, but still... we can jump already.)
Personally, I want a new Hexen instead lol. Will never happen, but a slow, plodding, weighty, dark fantasy, puzzle oriented, backtracking-filled, hub-based, trap-heavy FPS in a modern engine would be really fun imo.
I realize you and I care about Hexen and Heretic, but the marketing people almost certainly believe that no one gives a crap about Hexen nor Heretic
marketing team usually only knows 1 thing, and that's money. despite the fact there'll be money to get from hexen and heretic lol.
