Where is Quake, Heretic, and Hexen?
There's no better time to revisit those games. It seems like they want to milk the blood out of the Doom cow first before moving to the next. We love Doom, but For God's sake, id, have some balls and get busy with something new or different worthy of your legacy.

Phil Spencer was wearing a Hexen shirt at one of the previous Xbox events, last time he did that with an IP it got revived not long after. I do think both Heretic/Hexen and Quake are going to get new games eventually, but obviously it won't be until after Dark Ages comes out.

Quake Champions got screwed with the stupid match making. They only keep it around for the name and to promote QuakeCon.
Witchfire is a great new Hexen. Witchfire is a good example when developers not from a multimillion-dollar studio create a great shooter. And when millionaire studios with effective managers take over old franchises, expect trouble. Because they don't create games, but think about how to make money by studying trends.

True, but if I'm not mistaken MS owns them now or at least have rights on the IPs.

Witchfire is an enjoyable shooter in a fantasy setting, but that doesn't make it a Hexen-like experience for me. First and foremost, guns. That just immediately disqualifies it from feeling Hexen-esque to me. Secondly, it has quasi-roguelite design where you have to decide when/whether to retreat to your sanctuary with the "loot" you've acquired, or press on and risk losing it. The developers themselves describe it as a combination of "roguelite, extraction shooter, and RPG" elements.

And finally, the pace, ratio of emphasis on action to puzzles, and lack of a plodding, methodical exploration full of traps and perils, all just make the game feel nothing like Hexen to me.

This is kind of what I was alluding to in my earlier post. People see "FPS + fantasy" and think Hexen or Heretic. In the case of Heretic, that's kind of true. But Hexen had a very particular design emphasis and approach that made it more distinct from Doom and other games in a way that Heretic never quite felt to me. This is why I'm skeptical we'll ever see an actual modern spiritual successor to Hexen, because to the general audience all Hexen means is FPS + Fantasy/medeival setting, and Doom: TDA now already includes some of that.

Fwiw, the closest thing I've played to a modern Hexen-like experience is Hands of Necromancy. But that's a game intentionally using GZDoom to create that authentic feeling experience, which isn't what we're really talking about if we want a fully modern take on Hexen in the way the recent Doom games have been for Doom.

LOL why are you so mad? A lot of people played single player Quakes mostly for multiplayer too (especially Quake 2), multiplayer is soul of these games. Making a single player only Quake would be a travesty.

I'm glad to see you have been banned. Those games are formally attached to the spirit of disgruntled mainstream teen America in the 1990s and they should not ever come back. They are not for people now. They were for us. That time is over now.
They made Quake Champions, which is not bad per-se, but it's really disappointing how it doesn't support dedicated servers (there's not even a server browser), no modding/map making (they make new official ones from time to time but it's not the same thing), only 8 players max, copying of "heroes" concept from "hero shooters", etc.

Heretic and Hexen are technically from Raven Software, but since both, id and Raven are under MS now, I guess MS is free to use or license those IPs.

I personally would like to see atleast remasters of the Heretic and Hexen games, by a capable dev (e.g. Nightdive).

I also wish for a SP-oriented new Quake game, but I guess since the brand is less recognizable, they'll just keep pumping out new DooM games instead.

For sure, modding is an integral part of those classic Quake titles.

With the source codes and modding tools being available, you could make your very own game too, which is exactly what some indie devs did (e.g. Aeon, Ion Fury, Selaco, etc).

Now, back to your comment; "Them and us", and "should never come back", what's this about? Anyway, old games are coming back all the time and they borrow from each other all the time. What do you think the new Doom games are? Wolfenstein, Shadow Warrior, LBA, Alone in the Dark, System Shock, Baldur's Gate, and many more. In fact, one can argue that most games of the past are much more fun and creative than most games today.

That time might be gone, but it's not over, kid.

Mods and contents are not the same as a completely new game. That kid is mixed up.
