Hexen, for me at least, needs to be slow paced, methodical, hub-based, have lots of backtracking, have lots of puzzle solving, and be full of traps. And make use of inventory items. Those things are what set it apart from Heretic for me, and Heretic was more "fantasy Doom" to me than Hexen was. Hexen felt like its own distinct entity to me.
That said, I've said and will keep saying, I'd love a new Hexen. Or hell even just a Nightdive remaster of Hexen with a new mission pack or something like we saw for both Quake and Quake II. That would make my day. In the mean time, the closest thing to Hexen I've played in the modern era is Hands of Necromancy.
