Survival Games don't need story - since the purpose is survival.
But if you are going from Point A to B because the game tells you to, there needs to be a reason you are doing that. This isn't a survival game - its essentially a railway shooter.
Yes there's a story, it continues on into za4. I don't notice a difference between the story though because who cares. I'm here to bust some zombie faces after a day of work.
