Leave the setup on default or for one player.
If my old head and hands can do this then any body can do it :)
Single player or not.
That said, it might be more fun if I had someone to play with. While I can generally handle zombies, listening to zombie noises while playing solo is pretty unnerving for me.
Have finished this solo on Sniper Elite with enemy for two players (granted it took ages, but it is doable).
Maybe this game just isn't for you?
First the game repays accuracy. One headshot will kill an ordinary zombie whilst four body shots might not.
Generally you want to keep your distance between you and the zombies. Always try and leave an escape route where you can run to the other side of the map.
I changed my secondary from a machine gun to a shotgun which I find more effective.
Also space bar to kick zombies and skeletons is a life saver. Don't melee with a mob however. You will die.
For sieges your mines, dynamite and trip wires will make dents in the opposing hordes. A well timed and placed grenade can do a lot of damage to zombie mobs.
When in a multiplayer nine times out of ten make an effort to save KO'd and bleeding team mates. Right at the end of a level facing a single surviving elite it might be better to just kill the elite.
You also don't say where you are having the problems.
The final stage of "Village of the Damned" is a c...omprehensively difficult battle and only the best can attempt it solo. There are other nasty choke points during the game and the last levels are tough. The toughest sections often need a good team and multiple attempts to defeat.
The beauty of ZAT is that you can just pick your favourite maps.
My suggestion - join a multiplayer game on a low difficulty and stay at the rear - but do watch your back.
Also maps can be learned and the game gets easier once you know where ammo is, where the zombies spawn, and when elites and special zombies are coming.

I think the tactic you should look for is to run around and by Zmobies and gather lots of zombies around and then blast them with the grenade to save ammunition. And kick them alot in places where you dont have to much ammunition. Or try and run and get the zombies to gather in a line and shoot many of them at the same time/row, (around a corner for example staying close to the wall.
This game isnt to hard if you know how to play it, then again, im playing campaign and still on first episode.
Ps. When you get where the horde and the boss are, try just to run far away from the main enemy, and shoot from distance and then run and shoot from distance. Don't worry about the zombies walking around until you finish the big guy off.
Hope this helps a little bit, Good luck to you!
I'm sorry but this is unreasonable. You are complaining that you can't complete the game on the highest difficulty solo. The solutions are simple: -
1) Lower the difficulty
2) Play with others
3) Git gud
Elite SHOULD be a challenge for the top players. It's when you can't get through the game on the easiest difficulty alone that there's cause for complaint.
