What is happening with Double Dragon?

This game series can't seem to catch a break. I do understand there are great games out there, but what is going on with some of these mediocre/slightly above average titles? Are they running out of ideas?

DOUBLE DRAGON REVIEVE

Good:
The basic act of punching dudes is fun. You can get some good juggles going. The "gimmicks" are good. Using the environment (Walls, Pushing and kicking people into objects works well most of the time.
The 3d movement and punching works really well while emulating the flat camera angle from 2d beat em ups. In this aspect it's a great 3d adaption.

If this is enough for you, go ahead and give it a try.

Bad:
The still image cutscenes are garbage. The game would have been better if they were cut. Some events have in game animations. Something quick and easy could have been done in engine instead of the slow, dull cutscenes.

The score system is broken. You either get a C because you died and your score reset or you get an S+ because you didn't die. Also, score doesn't carry over stage to stage.

The blue armor mechanic is poorly implemented. In general, hitting an enemy while it's blue should stun it. However some enemies are arbitrarily immune to specific attacks. You just have to trial and error until you find the one the game designers want you to use.

The final boss has a seemingly unavoidable move that hits you for 33% of your health. A bold design decision.

The extra mode is pretty rough. In difficulty and in design. The difficulty is at 'find a trainer' level. The time window for victory so tight it's virtually impossible to complete higher levels.
The 'do combo in x time' should have been 'don't get hit'. Since if you do get hit you just have to wait out the timer and fail.

The translation is one of the worst I've seen. Could be accurate, but damn it's awkward to listen to.

The game is way too expensive for the rough, unfinished quality it presents.

Critical errors:
Super move doesn't work when you press the button when you really need it. It would be better if it just worked with a button press and didn't need an enemy near you.
Dodge button, Block button, Super armour button. You don't need this many defence options in a beat em up. Simplicity is key.
Ground finisher doesn't work 99% of the time. The prompt appears and you just grab the air instead. Probably would have been better to not include it, and just let your low attack hit grounded enemies for more damage.
Wall finisher doesn't work 90% of the time. The enemy usually pops out of the combo if they are on a wall.
Throw always does the finisher if there is a wall above you. You can't use it for crowd control in this situation.
Grab and pick up item are on the same button. The game has no way on knowing if you want to grab the enemy in front of you or the weapon on the ground.

Bug: When finishing the game with Marian. The game soft locked after beating the final boss.

Maximize the Fun of Two Player Co-op | Developer's Diary Revive Vol.6

Hello everyone. We are the Double Dragon series development team at Arc System Works. In this sixth installment of our Developer's Diary Revive, our project for sharing information about the series, we will take a deep dive into co-op, an indispensable element of the beat 'em up genre.

Double Dragon Revive supports both local / online co-op.

Guillaume Cailteux (Creative Director) and Hiroshi Nagaki (Executive Director) from the game's development team will introduce the mechanics of co-op play and the Extra Mode, which offers a different way to play from the Story Mode.

Aiming to Create New, Passionate Co-op Memories

Guillaume Cailteux: When you think of beat 'em up games, I believe the image of co-op is very strong. From the late 80s to the 90s, games in this genre were mostly played shoulder-to-shoulder with friends on arcade cabinets or home consoles. Since the 2000s, online modes have become widespread, allowing people to play together with friends who are far away. Though the form has changed with the times, I think many people have fond memories of heated co-op battles.

We on the development team also grew up with those kinds of fun memories. That's why we hope that Double Dragon Revive will be an opportunity for you to create new memories.

Hiroshi Nagaki: We have paid the utmost attention to adjusting the game balance to ensure that it is sufficiently rewarding not only in single-player but also in co-op.

Fundamentally, we have designed it so that playing cooperatively feels more advantageous. For example, when one player performs an action that fills the Dragon Orb Gauge needed for Super Special Moves, the other player also gains a certain amount of the gauge. This allows players to acquire more resources than in single-player, making it easier to use the special moves and enabling a more stress-free progression.

Also, as is customary in co-op play, there's a classic fun to be had in coordinating attacks, like ganging up on a single enemy or splitting up to defeat enemies flanking you from the left and right. Please look forward to the Extra Mode, which we'll introduce later, as it includes missions that are difficult to clear without good cooperation.

Take on the Challenging Extra Mode with a Friend!

Hiroshi Nagaki: In Double Dragon Revive, we've also included an Extra Mode that offers a different kind of challenge compared to the main Story Mode. This is a game mode where you challenge missions with special clear conditions.

They are broadly categorized into Subjugation Missions, Defense Missions, Combo Missions and Destruction Missions, each requiring you to clear different objectives. The later missions are so difficult that even the development team can fail if they're not careful, so we definitely want you to give them a try.

Guillaume Cailteux:: We've put a lot of thought into the Extra Mode to allow players to better enjoy the diverse actions and game systems. We'd like you to first get to know the world in Story Mode and, once you're used to the gameplay, take this on as the next step.

Furthermore, as a reward for clearing missions, you can also learn the backstories of each character. You'll also discover the backstories of side characters and enemies—details that aren't covered in the Story Mode. Please get the game to enjoy this content!

Hiroshi Nagaki: We want this game to be played by a wide range of people, from those who are new to the beat 'em up genre to veterans. Also, Double Dragon Revive has pre-order bonuses. If you pre-order the game, in addition to bonuses like alternate character costumes, you will receive a completely new pixel art game called Double Dragon Dodgeball as a separate title.

a very good game and fun to play. but honestly not that exciting. they should have brought back chin seimei character playable. also the online coop play is dead. Barely anyone plays this game.
