🎵 Monday Devlog 44: Music Notes

Welcome back!

So.. about there not being a devlog last week. Long story short, life has been getting in the way lately. It’s nothing dire, and progress on the game is moving, BUT a lot of things that I was supposed to get done during my semester got pushed into now by the semester itself, since it was so busy. The result is that the start of summer has been messy!! However, things have been stabilizing again, and productivity will ramp back up this week!

Where Are We?

At the moment, I’m currently working on adding discord rich presence to the game and updating the achievement system so Windows Defender doesn’t get mad at it anymore (+ other nice benefits). This is all thanks to the advanced technologies Rezarg has been cooking up (he should honestly just be added to the dev team at this point lol).

However, for this devlog, I’ll be handing off the mic to the three music artists who work on the game, so they can discuss their plans for the music in 2.0! None of them have actually written in the devlogs before and It’s starting to feel too weird that I keep writing “we” when I’m the only person who ever writes these, lol. I’ll be passing the mic over to boxlion now so she can discuss her plans :).

Boxlion's Portion

Heyo! :3 I’m thatboxlion, and I’m the composer for the Sweets album! I'm honored to compose another album for 2.0, and I've got a couple of ideas that I’m excited to start brainstorming with >:]. I’m planning on making 4 to 5 songs, and I’m hoping to make them even better than the Sweets album was!

If you wanna see some of my own stuff (I’m also a game dev :]), I’ve got a discord server[discord.gg] too! You can also listen to the Sweets album[open.spotify.com] on spotify, if you didn’t know ‘,:]. That’s my bit, now I’ll pass the mic off to Logan for his plans!

Logan's Portion

Hi all!

This is Logan. It’s weird that this is my first time writing to you all in a devlog. As of a few days ago, the semester has come to an end, and I’m ready to come back to this game. I’m excited to share a few plans I have for the 2.0 update. These concepts are still a little early and they are subject to change. That means that feedback from you would be very helpful!

Firstly, I would like to share a bit of a personal project that I’ve been working on for a while. I’m working on an album! I had to put a pause on it due to school, but now that the semester’s over, I’m excited to get to work on it again. I don’t have any more to share about it at this time, but select tracks from it will be included in the 2.0 update.

Another thing that could be coming to the update is a collection of remixes of tracks from Galacdrive. I’ll be honest, I’ve learned a ton since the Galacdrive era, and it would be fun to flex a bit of that gained experience to create new amped up versions of those tracks. You can let me know your thoughts as well as some of your favorite tracks that you think I should remix.

With school wrapping up, I’m turning more to this project to put my energy into. I’m looking forward to engaging more with this amazing community. I’m taking inspiration from Jackson, who does so much for this community. I have no idea how he gets one of these out every week.

Prism4ticturtle's Portion

Hello, Prism here! I’m the composer of the Dreams album and I’m thrilled to be back for another album for 2.0! This time I’m considering a more intense/frantic album, maybe even utilizing some of the distorted vocals I’ve been playing around with recently. While I am still in the theorycrafting stage as of now, I look forward to sharing my progress with you all soon!

Wrapping up..

While I predict 1.3 will release sometime this week, I don't want to guarantee anything - things seem to derail so often and so quickly that I think it's just best that new features are announced when they should be, lol. In addition, some drafting for the layout of the level editor has been made, and we're messing around with it behind closed doors. More info will be revealed later :).

Game goes out of sync sometimes

I've had a weird issue, where the game will stutter for a sec, and the notes are then completely out of sync. I have a screen recording of this happening if this is necessary. Anyone else experienced this?

🏁 Monday Devlog 43: Finish Line

That's it.

After 9 months of toil (well I mean some of it was pretty fun but still), my academic year is over for now. I'll talk about it more in the conclusion but essentially, last week was the culmination of my semester so Parse had to go on the backburner for a bit.

1.3 Release Date

Even though I don't have too much to share, I can talk about when 1.3 will go live, which is:

Friday, May 9.

Now that I'm back home and currently without too much to do for the next couple days, I can focus on squaring away the remaining bugs and doing some last minute balancing work to get 1.3 ready. The remaining things left are:

- Fixing an audio bug
- Fixing a bug with slashing
- Balance changes to the last track
- Short 1.3 trailer

..And that's it! All of this is very much doable in a day, let alone a whole row of them which I have lined up. In fact, we'll probably be done with all of this before the actual release date, so the first bit of progress on the level editor will likely be able to be shown next devlog.

Onwards..

Sorry for such a tiny devlog this week. I probably lost more sleep in the past week than any other week in the previous four, five-ish years of my life. Everything was due at once and lots of things needed to be wrapped up rapidly. Sleep became something not just secondary, nor tertiary, but quaternary. And in the words of John Oliver, "Once you get past three items on a priority list, anything after that isn't a priority by definition."

The trailer[clan.cloudflare.shttps] for this student project took roughly two days, including one night where the bed was entirely skipped for the evening.Thankfully, the complete opposite is true for this week - I have things to do, but nothing that is imminent and breathing down my throat. I actually have room to work on things! Yippie!!

📍 Sunday Devlog 42: The Level Editor & 2.0 Roadmap

Hey hey!

It's been a busy week for me, and college finals are bearing down on me in a last stand. Because of this, I didn't have too much time to work on the game this week aside from tracking some bugs to be fixed.

At this time 1.3 is still in open testing! There'll be an update to it later this week with some changes and fixes. Until then, I'd like to talk about..

The Roadmap

I've posted a couple roadmaps before, so here's a concise one with all the relevant info.

So, let's talk about some of the stuff shown here in a little more detail.

The level editor will be worked on first. As soon as the 1.3 update is out, work will begin on the level editor. Well, it kind of already has, but not in a way that is visible in-game quite yet.

Once the level editor is ready, we will release it as an open beta. This way, you can get to making levels & providing feedback on our level building system early, and iterate on the builder & any features while the rest of 2.0 is underway. This also helps fill the workshop with levels early. Unfortunately I have no clue when the editor may be ready, it could take weeks or months. My guess is that it will be done by the end of May, but that's only an estimate. Regardless, it'll be talked about every week while it's being built in the devlogs!

We are going to be adding hold notes & obstacles to Parse-O-Rhythm. These have already been concepted out, and while we're very excited to add them (some team members will likely do SFX for them!), the level editor is coming first for the reasons listed above. As soon as these features are ready, though, they'll be added to the editor too.

After that, the game'll build towards a 2.0 launch. This will likely have a date announced after the level editor is complete, since we'll be able to gauge our work speed by then. I would like to emphasize "we", because all three of the audio members on the team are going to be making new albums with the new level features :).

After that, we'll have to see from there. To be honest, completing the 2.0 update will be like what leaving early access is to most games. The game will be fully complete and the vision will have been completed. If people really like it, then great! We'll keep working on it. But the 2.0 launch will put us in a place where we could move on to a new long term project (while keeping this one maintained) comfortably. Where our resources will go depends on how well we can market the game, and if people like it!

Sorry to not show off any new development work, but hopefully being clear about these goals can make up for it. I'm hoping that 1.3 will be bug-free by the end of the week, but we'll have to see how the final days of this crazy semester for me goes. As always, thanks so much for following the devlogs. Can't wait for the full game!

I just went through the demo again, It's always fun playing these songs. I'm surprised that there are apparently going to be 30 songs in the full game, I think I'll actually consider buying the game since I already enjoy these 4 songs so much.
