So Pirate bases respawn after you destroy them?
Found a pirate base one jump away from my third colony and sent a couple of destroyers to wipe it out, and I got an extra pop for that colony for my efforts. However the system only had a volcanic planet and an asteroid belt so not a system that I could colonize. As it only had a single warp point, I decided to ignore it, but several turns later I got a message than a pirate fleet had been spotted, so I had to repeat. So I decided to station a couple of destroyers there.
Some time later, the first Antaran incursion happened, aimed at my third colony. I had just managed to build my first cruiser and already had a couple of destroyers and 3 frigates as well as a missile base and star base. That incursion consisted of 1 battleship, 4 destroyers and 4 frigates so yes I got my ass handed to me, but what surprised me was that I actually managed to destroy a couple of the Antaran ships. I thought they were supposed to be so much more advanced and I would need a minimum of Tier 7 or 8 tech, and I think I was only up to tier 4?

It depends on what mods you are playing but pirate bases will respawn up until a set turn and send increasingly large fleets at you if you let them sit. You can stop them spawning by having vision into a system. Some people exploit them by letting the spawn and killing them.

Antarans will also vary in difficulty depending on mods. With the base game, the antarans will use the best tech available to you so you will get a stronger enemy but not really what you expect out of them. For me, at least, I amped them up in Tactical Mod so you face much smaller fleets but at Orion level tech. Possible to kill but feels more like it should to me.

Well, that explains it. My first game so no Mods. Still testing out different custom races. Since I usually like to research everything in a 4X game, I chose Technologist but it seems that researching everything may not be the best thing.
