How to build bigger ships?

I am playing Humans, and currently the biggest ship which I can build is the cruiser. (I am translating „Kreuzer“ from the German version here in the hope that that‘s what it‘s called in English).

However I already have a star base, and for the latter it says thst it is needen to build battle ships, titans and death stars. But I cannot build those three. Do I need to research them first?

If you haven't discovered them through research or spy theft or by trading, then you can't built them.

I think a star base is just part of what you need. There are support engineering techs that allow you to build the bigger ships at your star bases. I haven't played in a while so I don't remember specifically, but I'm pretty sure you need special construction techs also, as well as the specific ship construction techs... and if you don't have them normally you will have to steal them from your opponents Also, since the bigger ships take more command points, you may actually need to upgrade to battle stations or star fortress before you have enough points to build the ships..
