If you want to locate planets within your Empire, select the Empire button...
Note that I think you need the Unoffical Code Patch (UCP) mod for it to work correctly. If you do NOT have UCP installed and want to play through your current game, don't install UCP until you're ready to play a new game.
Assuming UCP is already installed, sort by biome in the Planet screen, find the planet you're interested in colonizing, then left-click once on the planet's icon - the galaxy map will refocus on that planet.
Maybe put in a request in the UCP 5.8 WIP discussion post for a "Set Galactic Focus" option in the Planet screen, so the galaxy focus is switched to that planet after exiting the empire screen.
Or maybe request middle-clicking a planet icon in the Empire screen sets the galaxy focus to it - I'd have suggested you say "right-clicking", but he's currently trying to standardize right-clicking to mean "exit window/screen".
***** Enhancements *****
Add.0.0.5.8. Added support to the Empire Management Screen, clicking on a planet image with the Control key held down will exit the screen and take you to the planet on the galaxy map
