Agumented Engine question
I am trying a new play style now. So now I am going to be a bit more aggressive instead of a passive Star Trek Federation type playstyle.

So my question is now that I am using Agumented Engines where I never touched them before, I noticed you get a massive, like +20 or more beam defence. Question is, is this bonus "always" on or just when the Agumented Engines are activated? If the former, great, will keep them, but if it's the later, then I find them useless. To me it's just a waste of space because of only 7 seconds with almost triple the cool down is just not worth it.

Also is there something I might be missing by not using them besides the speed boost you get when traversing star lanes as well.

Yes the defense bonus is constant. You can see the number on the stats list on the right of the design screen.

Yes, the bonus is always on and effects your "BEAM DEFENCE". Please note that not all beams are defensive. The engine effect is on cooldown after you use it. It's an effect you have to master in tactical combat. The cooldown does not mean you only get one use per battle ;).

This is a very powerful unit to use. The drawback is the space....but then again, if you win a battle with it, it might be worth 10 times the space!

I use this engine on one of my designed ships. Cruisers it tends to be. They are awesome to engage the enemy on the flank, while your missles launcher ships opens the gates of hell behind them.

With or without the bonus beam defense, I personally find Augmented Engines to be useful for a couple other things:

1. It increases my travel speed by 50%. With Fusion Drives and Augmented Engines, my ships can usually traverse from one system to another in just one turn.

2. The quick boost in travel speed is very useful in either quickly closing the distance towards enemies, or performing hit-and-run attacks using long-range weapons with a low rate-of-fire, such as missiles or torpedoes.

Thanks everyone, nice to see what I was not seeing. Greatly appreciated.

I once made an augmented Alkari frigate with the best drive.

It was glorious.

Then it died.

You made ONE frigate? If the design was that good, you should have made 50 of them.

Oh, you're right. I thought it was a 0.5 increase not a 50% increase because the stats readout on the design says so. I was about to say, "This man is a fool! He doesn't know what he's talking about." But I decided to go into the game and verify. I built ships with and without augmented engines and a long distance flight went from 23 turns to 11 turns with augmented engines. I thought they were overly massive for a 0.5 increase, and they would be for that, but a 50% increase in strategic speed is a lot.

It wasn't - it was just fast ;-)

Little fact: Scout Ships come already equipped with Augmented Engines.
