Do unassigned leaders still work?

Some pilot leaders have really nice empire wide perks like 20% command points, I'd hate to lose it by putting it in some lone frigate. Do I still get the bonus if he's just sitting as unassigned in my leader pool?

It takes 4 turns for a leader to get to an assigned spot. If you don't need the extra command points right away, you could always hold him back until you do, and assign him to a more durable ship than a frigate.

A second alternative would be to assign him right away, and just be sure to keep that ship in a safe system so he doesn't get killed off by something hostile.

You can always reassign leaders to different colonies or ships, but it takes 4 turns to get them to their new post, during which time you will have to do without their perks.

once you get survival pods from advanced construction they escape the destruction of their ship. It is an automatic perk not smething you have to add to ship design.
