controller has to be plugged/connected before starting the game, bind everything in joypad 0 (it won't map/bind the controls to anything else so Joypad 0 is the only option that will work) in the controls option on the menu, the controller will only work during the races not in the menu like WTFGamer said.
Now, because I upgraded some parts of my PC I was curious to see how the game looked as I remember it was a really good looking game back then.
Trouble is, even though I go to the controller option in the menu, pressing a button on the controller does nothing at all so I cannot even configure the settings. I know the game sees the controller as being plugged in as I tried with both plugged in just for the hell of it, then started the game and Joypad 1 popped up as well as Joypad 0 which previously was the only one shown.
I thought, ok, lets just assume that the controller works during the game and not the menu then. However, I start a quick race (also tried with the season race too) and the controller does not respond to movement. To make the problem worse, I am now facing backwards as soon as the race starts and I repeatedly crash as the view refuses to return to normal when pressing the keys on the keyboard! I can only think that there is a controller conflict going on but I am damned if I can see how! Aaaargh!
First off, on the Controls screen, left and right arrow will cycle through the available input devices. It's a terrible interface design because you would never know the other options are there.
Second, in order to get it to recognize the controller initially, I had to go into the game files and run the executable as administrator directly, not through Steam. Once I got the controller set up, I was able to go back to running it normally, launching through Steam, and not as administrator. It seems that in order to configure a gamepad, you have to run as admin then, once it's set up, you can just run it normally. Probably some Windows 10 security BS. Never had this issue on Windows 7.
I am using the Steam controller, with the dongle. I even have my control layout with arrow keys mapped for menu navigation to the left trackpad and 'Start and Select' buttons for Enter and ESC with left stick click as Tab. All in-game controls are fully functioning analog gamepad inputs.
Can't get it to work with any Bluetooth controller
I have a "cracked" version of this game on an old offline W7 pc and it works flawlessly with an official wireless 360 controller. (I believe it is an old games for Windows live version)
This steam version is a travesty.
The best you can hope for is to use the steam controller api and basically map keyboard controls to a controller.
The big slap in the face is that any fix you manage to get working is NOT ideal because the game uses the controller triggers as gas and brakes which function on an analog axis...
Which means it'll never feel/control naturally because it'll just be ON/OFF for gas and brakes...so CONTROLLED drifting is impossible.
All you can do is brute force powerslides...
Interesting...BUT do the triggers work in an analog fashion?
As in when you pull the right one slightly, does the car move slowly?
Or is it full blast stomp on the pedal as soon as you touch the trigger?
