I don't remember any run button/functionality. Do you just have smoke disabled or something?
Answering your questions I do notice speed differences between Aaron M and mine. Even though I follow his exact same path he always seems to reach places faster and I've noticed it in many levels so I don't think it's an isolated incident or a miscalculation.
As for the smoke, there's none now and the buttons are the ones stated on Chameleon mode. Lastly, as far as I know, there is no option to enable/disable the smoke, at least none that's visible.
It is possible that developers took away the smoke making you run always, but as stated before, I still notice the speed differences that motivated this discussion.
It's true that you cannot possibly have such good time records in the easy mode (a.k.a. normal) because all enemies are much slower so some speedrun paths become impossible, not to mention the obvious delays. Which may be the slowness that you perceive.
By the way you get no rewards for finishing the game or the challenges, in case someone's wondering.
