I would want to make roads and put check points on them to increase security for traders. The check point could be as simple as a tower and a 4 man barrack to a half town of 20 guys to just defend the road. The increased security would expand the traders wares, reduce raiders and raise the difficulty of raiders who would attack defended caravans. It would reduce fuel use and the vehicles general repairs could be less intense. No road, trips take longer. The Creation of roads doesnt have to be laying bitume...
