Just a fun survey that just random hit me.

What is your most dreaded map spawn?

Mali takes my vote. You know the moment of absolute hatred and despair when you do not see the crystal mountain when you visit it as your fifth.
On a side note, I wish the next expansion/DLC will introduce a proper 5-star gold map. I suggest El Dorado or something of that ilk.

My personal honorable mentions:
1. Andean really makes/breaks a science game. I hate it when Necro/Alpaca do not spawn together, and I hate it, naturally, when the sage spawns at all. If I have to choose, I will take Alpacalypse.
2. Hungarian: whenever the Beast spawns. I will take the Hunting Plate or the Portrait, though I think the Portrait is probably better even in mass beguiler+Jan-Piet strategy.
3. Highland: technically this is not about a map spawn, but I do love to repeat myself - the drop rate of Chessmen is too damn low! Please fix it.
4. Shangri-La: whenever the Yeti spawns. Its associated quest makes you run around the map most of the times, which is annoying as hell. Its alternative is much better.

Sinking Cathedral and Cursed Tree near the starting point. How many resolve and supplies am I going to lose. Red Hill at Egypt, that -2 supplies and -2 resolve really hurts.

The Andes in general... I apparently haven't learned to manage my resources properly yet because I can never finish even one quest without OPTIMAL spawn locations.

Mali Mali Mali Mali and Mali... Always the wrong treasure...

How about when things *don't* spawn like, say, supplies:

Despite it being a rare issue, I would happily join a support group for victims of bad map generation.

I went the entirety of Hungary last night without a single non-boss encounter... right after I'd invested heavily into Anthropology. Was a great time.

Generally if I dont have to go to Egypt I will always skip it. I always start with the oasisis on the other side of the map and the first two nodes are always empty and cost 2 supply to travel to.

LOL. This. Egypt and Mali are my least familiar maps.

Empty Egypt Spawns were definately the worst, its a good that they fixed that now. That's a pretty old screenshot btw, oh how I miss the old supplies/resolve icon

Hmm. Definitely Mali - always when I want the mountain, the mask takes it's place, and vice versa. Minor spoilers - mainly treasure related.

Also Hungary and Transylvania - when I REALLY need just one particular treasure in those places (Hunting plate, portrait!), it never spawns. Likewise the Zombie spawn - I generally don't have Engineering (A gold/science stat requirement for treasure? On a status map? Really?!) and Quick Thinking at 3 on two separate chars, and it wastes one of the rather better treasures. Everywhere else is pretty reasonable.

Lost Island - getting the 3 vital spawns in the right places: A) The dog training yard, B) the Medal of Secrecy spawn and C) the paliantologist. When they're all round the outside and the expedition ends are in the wrong place too, it's time to say hello to debuffs :P

Honourable mentions - the empty hut for the voodoo mask in Emerged island. Not so much that it's not there, but that you get 4 or 5 empty spots in the middle of the island so you've no idea which it'll be and always pick it wrong (Or when the ONLY access point you can reach is the expensive one that ends you on 6 supply instead of 7). Similarly, the teaser parts of the crystal all in the middle of the island and the actual pieces in the furthest three corners.

EDIT: Corrected misuse of Anthropologist, thank you Animus!

Hungarian: Beast (hurray, Hungarian Mix! Watch me get this treasure which does nothing for me compared to *any* other possible spawn.)
Mali: Chuckles
Transylvania: Zombie (stupid requirements for a status expedition.)

To be fair, Hugarian usually has 1/2 usable Class A/B tresures; i.e.,

Portrait is always good, probably the best;
Savior and Hunting plate cover two different niches, so only one of them is good (unless it is a general build with many skills)
Ace and Mix are just awful for scoring purposes.

I think the requirement for Zombie should have been "either" not "and". I could have been mistaken.

Technically, he is a "paleontologist", scholar of prehistoric animals; whereas anthropologist is someone who studies humans.

Not as much of a problem as the things mentioned above, but when the researcher on the Lost Island spawns right next to the landdelver... You have to circle all the way around the island, back to the researcher, and then to your intended finish. So many hunger penalties...

Also, any Emerged Island spawn with a lot of empty nodes (or just more than one) in the center of the map. Makes it really hard to plan a route that visits the Voodoo Queen - a feat which I've only managed to do once at all. Math is hard enough sometimes.

Edit: basically what BlackVision just said while I was typing this up. ^^

Interesting, because in my experience the paleontologist almost always spawns close to the machine.

Oh, and while not technically a 'map' spawn... when I'm doing Viking Landing and want the Celtic Helmet. By all the gods- that thing is ridiculous. I swear it's not even a 13% chance to spawn in the Turf House, and the few times it does, it doesn't offer the one result I want (usually research). (not to mention that you have to either FAIL the roll or choose to not gain exp)

Now I am confused. Celtic Helmet? Do you mean Viking Helmet? But why, for the achievement?

Anyway, this BS just happened. I mean, I should have been grateful that so many supply nodes spawned, but seriously...
