1. Don't be afraid to take on hunger penalties in the first 3 expeditions, try to explore the whole map and go to every node with challenge and encounter. It's not always possible but it will get easier with experience and your score will snowball as you get more tokens early on. Make sure you get at least 2 supplies related research papers, Trade and Plunder is great for supplies and exploring more of the expedition maps.
2. Focus on one token and maximize that token in challenges with perks allocation. You can get bonus tokens from some research papers, keep them in mind. Don't neglect the other two resources though.
3. Have a designated insight spender in mind when you choose your team. Build up his/her perks to maximize token per insight accordingly in the first 4 expeditions and save insights to spend right before 5 expeditions. Campfire stories and research papers help a lot in getting more tokens per insight, keep them in mind and try to get the ones which help your insight spender.

It will take a bit of time adjusting to them and their requirements (encounters are no joke in 4 and 5 star expeditions!) but if you allow yourself some time to adjust to them and find how you prefer to beat them, you can start earning more there than elsewhere.
Another thing to bear in mind is which expeditions to pick according to your crew: if you've got a team that's best focused on getting gold, for example, you probably want to avoid going to Transylvania or Hungary, as those are mainly focused on status. The details on the expeditions when choosing where to go should give a bit of an indication for what''s best to take there in terms of encounter-style and resources, though the main way to find out is to play through them a few times.
Another point worth raising - if you haven't already been doing so - is how to best take advantage of your crew's abilities. Captain perks tend to focus on earning particular resources (or maximising their effectiveness), so are likely to play a big part in your crew composition. Similarly, you want to look for synergy between your crew in encounters: it's usually better to be strong in one or two attitudes (Friendly, Devious, Aggressive) across your crew than to have some of each. Again, this is a rule you'll break more and more as you get better, but for learning the ropes, I recommend focusing on just one attitude and avoiding the expeditions where that attitude is weaker.
Lastly, it is usually easier to beat the turn-based encounters when using gold as your primary resource as it means you'll get more gold to spend on better equipment in the shops. Status and Research can be extremely useful in unlocking things like supplies or getting more tokens, but I'd recommend trying Gold-based teams while you're learning the expeditions so that you can plan out future-trips more efficiently.
Good luck and have fun!
