Any tips to beating Rivaleux?
So Im super stoked about this game and the challenging aspect of turn based battles with a very intriguing twist! Very awesome mechanics to the game and the subtle ways to invoke excitement ( like the random wheel spins! ) is genius in its design!

With that said, I wouldnt say Im struggling, but maybe Im just not fully up to par understanding the systems in place for playing a bit more successfully, yet!
I understand a good portion of what Im doing and how to generally plan out for getting the most status I can for renown points.....But, I feel like Im missing something as I just cant seem to creep out of the 4th place spot at beating Rivaleux!
No matter what strategy I try I feel like I need 1-2 more adventures to beat him....

So, I was wondering if anyone had any tips to sorta help me get a better plan of action into play in order to be a bit more successful, or guide me in where I should possibly put my attention without totally spoiling it for me. I feel like I can do this, but it also feels like Im overlooking possibly something about the game that I either dont understand or just dont get at all!

Big thanks and I cant say enough about this awesome game!

There are lot of tips in older threads. I will list the most obvious ones:

1. Don't be afraid to take on hunger penalties in the first 3 expeditions, try to explore the whole map and go to every node with challenge and encounter. It's not always possible but it will get easier with experience and your score will snowball as you get more tokens early on. Make sure you get at least 2 supplies related research papers, Trade and Plunder is great for supplies and exploring more of the expedition maps.

2. Focus on one token and maximize that token in challenges with perks allocation. You can get bonus tokens from some research papers, keep them in mind. Don't neglect the other two resources though.

3. Have a designated insight spender in mind when you choose your team. Build up his/her perks to maximize token per insight accordingly in the first 4 expeditions and save insights to spend right before 5 expeditions. Campfire stories and research papers help a lot in getting more tokens per insight, keep them in mind and try to get the ones which help your insight spender.

@kcyw, thank you so much for the advice! I put it to good use and though I didnt beat Revaleux (2nd place) I did manage to finish the game entirely and will be going through again and again and again..... Ill post my scores here.

Great advice from kycw - only a few things I'd add, just from looking at your submitted scores - it's worth going for higher star expeditions as you get better. They're much easier to score high renown with once you know how to beat them, its just a lot harder to survive and do well in.

It will take a bit of time adjusting to them and their requirements (encounters are no joke in 4 and 5 star expeditions!) but if you allow yourself some time to adjust to them and find how you prefer to beat them, you can start earning more there than elsewhere.

Another thing to bear in mind is which expeditions to pick according to your crew: if you've got a team that's best focused on getting gold, for example, you probably want to avoid going to Transylvania or Hungary, as those are mainly focused on status. The details on the expeditions when choosing where to go should give a bit of an indication for what''s best to take there in terms of encounter-style and resources, though the main way to find out is to play through them a few times.

Another point worth raising - if you haven't already been doing so - is how to best take advantage of your crew's abilities. Captain perks tend to focus on earning particular resources (or maximising their effectiveness), so are likely to play a big part in your crew composition. Similarly, you want to look for synergy between your crew in encounters: it's usually better to be strong in one or two attitudes (Friendly, Devious, Aggressive) across your crew than to have some of each. Again, this is a rule you'll break more and more as you get better, but for learning the ropes, I recommend focusing on just one attitude and avoiding the expeditions where that attitude is weaker.

Lastly, it is usually easier to beat the turn-based encounters when using gold as your primary resource as it means you'll get more gold to spend on better equipment in the shops. Status and Research can be extremely useful in unlocking things like supplies or getting more tokens, but I'd recommend trying Gold-based teams while you're learning the expeditions so that you can plan out future-trips more efficiently.

Good luck and have fun!

May be try a gold bonus captain, or supplies captain like Kiwi and get some good gears to help you survive and explore the 4-5 stars expeditions. The later expeditions are more rewarding but also more difficult. If you can get above average gears, they make 5 stars expeditions more manageable.

Check out the treasure guide and the wiki too.
