If you don't have a well equipped team and / or are very experienced, any 5-star expedition is doomed to fail if you play on classic or impossible difficulty. Luckily, you don't have to take them on and can still win. Until you feel confident enough to face tougher challenges...
By give up on the run do you mean start a new game because the run is "dead"?
If you are struggling with that particular boss, there are 2 others you can attempt on the Lost island, defeating any of them finishes the expedition.
Don't be disheartened if you aren't able to win, everyone loses when they first start out. As a general guide, if you're doing 5 star expeditions you should be aiming to have at least 4 star defence gear on everyone and prefereably the same offence gear. defence trumps offence in most situations.
If there are any aspects of the game you are sturuggling with there is plenty advice available on the forums, ask a question and you will always get an answer.
Oh, I'll have to find the other bosses! I went to the other 3 places it mentioned after completing the main quest thinking it would allow me to leave after but it didn't. *fingers crossed*
The bosses on the Lost Island are exceptionally difficult, especially when new to them, getting obliterated by a boss is something we've all gone through :)
Part of renowned explorers is learning from your past expeditions and improving next time. If you can't win this time don't torture yourself with it, take the loss and come back stronger next time. It took me till my 10th expedition to have a successful 1-2-3-4-5 run through.
Lots of people would advice avoiding 5 star expeditions altogether till you are more comfortable with the game. Going 1-2-3-3-4 reduces the difficulty significantly and a winning score is still very achievable.
So, I think the core of your question has a misunderstanding about how Renowned Explorers works. Renowned Explorers is designed as a roguelike. What that means is that it's intended to be played over and over again, and has a permanent loss condition - if you run out of resolve, it's game over. Because of this design, it's possible to get to a spot where it's nearly impossible to win the game, no matter how many times you reload - mistakes you made previously will stop you from winning. Being able to save and load helps with this, but it's entirely possible that your game is finished, and you have to lose and start over.
Adventure Mode is a really cool feature, and can help new players get their bearings, and helps you explore a little more luxuriously. But keep in mind that the game is designed to make you start over when you lose, so it's totally possible that something hard will stop you in your tracks. If you can't beat something, it's probably a sign that it would be good to start over from the beginning - try some new strategies! Use what you've learned to improve for next time! You might've lost this one, but you'll get them next time.
