Why was Welkin made squad leader?
Was he any more capable than the other troops, or was he the only one with the balls/ovaries to take on the position? Was it because he brought his own tank that meant automatic Squad Leader status or that his dad was a general (Nepotism)?

Also, if he hadn't been in Squad 7,would that have meant they would have been tankless, I didn't see anyone else offering the use of one...

Leadership, much as it actually was in real life at the time was often given based on someone's education. Welkin was a 22yr old university student while the others were either in school or had just finished it. For this reason Welkin was deemed the most qualified.

However in reality Welkin would be made an NCO like a sergeant and an actual officer from officer school would lead the unit.

Dunno how it works on Gallia millitia. I think I remember in real world, University grad would automatically promoted into better position or something like that. Welkin might be uni grad in Science and Faldio in Archeology so they both get better promotion than the rest.

That, and nepotism and the fact that he own the best tank in the country might help.

Edit: beaten like imps

universal conscription, read in a glosary. he's gone through officer training in university
JimBond007 Nov 22, 2014 @ 3:13am
In glossary : In secondary military operation, he chose Tank Operation; at university, Officer Training.

He trained at Uni, chose training as a tank operator (like his father). He traveled everywhere in Gallia so he knows the terrain. And he got degrees at Uni.

He's the most qualify for being the leader of Squad 7. Of course there's Largo, the most experienced guy in Squad 7 but in his glossary, he prefers to stay a foot soldier...

He was basically Tom Hanks.

Because in Gallia, education - /any/ education - has a mandatory miltiary service component attached to it.

Rosie, a middle-school drop-out, has gotten the relatively least amount of military training because of this (see her Personality Profile).

Welkin Gunther, as an university graduate, not only had the entire school coursework for the Militia, but went on to University, where he not only got his degree in natural sciences of one sort, but also underwent officer training.

In other words, Gallia's universities are not only institutes of Higher Education, but -also- act as the Reserve Officer Training Corps.

And now you know why Welkin was made an officer! And knowing is half the battle! (The other half is red and blue lasers).

No one want a dumb@ss lead them around on the battlefield or order them to risk their lifes. An officer must be educated high enough and smart enough to issue proper order.

Welkin just happen to have a tank as the same time he is an officer, that's all
Danma Nov 22, 2014 @ 6:22am
He got the resources to be a leader. Basic military, knowledge (education), power and money (tank), and personality.

Largo used to doubt him also right? But he showed him what he made of and the deal was to follow him if Welkin won the battle.

He's the son of a famous war hero, well educated, he saved lives, his autority is only over a militia and he brought his own tank with him

Just take a look at your squad.
He's the most qualified to be the leader, even without the tank.
BakedZnake Nov 22, 2014 @ 6:57am
Welkins might have been the squad leader, but I think Isara saved the squad more often than not, until you know that thing happened. Plus combat experience trumps uni education in times of war, like in the real world officers might be giving out the orders, but the NCOs are the ones running things

Welkin Squad Leader?

1. He was Educated. There is only one NPO in your Squad who is also educated, and she is a Scout.

2. He had his own Bleeping Tank!

3. He and Alicia already had combat experience as well

In most armies, a Lieutenant like Wilken would have a Sergeant as a second-in-command. In this game, it appears to be Alicia, but realistically it would be Largo, the most experienced old hand (who would probably be in the army instead of the militia).

Largo, Rosie and Alicia are all Sergeants, they never ever said Alicia was ever his 2nd in Command. Just that she was to be a Sergeant.

Correct me if I err, but I seem to remember Wilken being told that Alicia would be his "assistant".
