Should you aim for an A rank on the first play ?
It feels a bit dumb when you have to rush the enemy on every phase

Play however you enjoy the game the most. That's the best advice I can give you.

This. If you feel underpowered, there's always skirmishes for more money and experience. Royal weapons are nice and all, but enjoying the game ought to come first.

And even then, you only get one extra royal weapon from the rank and the requirement for it is only B rank (not even A rank).

Thanks to all of you three, this is exactly what I wanted to know: I did not want to be stuck in the middle of the game because I was underpowered.

I haven't aimed for A rank on my first run and had never problems with being underpowered. If you want to go A rank for every battle on first run then good luck, because it's pretty tough sometimes and you only get one chance (if you don't save and load like 5 million times). :D

The intention from dev seems to be that New Game Plus is where you go for A-ranks, as by then you'll be super high leveled with end-game gear and also know what's going to happen on each of the maps, and even if you're not, you'll have all the skirmishes unlocked so you can just farm for experience there.

YMMV as to whether this is good design or not.

I got B and C ranks on most missions, did a few skirmishes (like, 6 or 7 for the whole campaign), and I got no real problems levelling my troops or unlocking the weapons I wanted. So you don't have to aim for A rank on the first playthrough. And that way, you can play the game without the headache of doing it *perfectly* on the first run (especially since the "perfect way" is the "boring speedrun way" in this game, IMO. I had more fun when I forgot the ranks, and decided to really *Play* the battles, rather than rushing them)
