Can't remember seeing much fanservice in it, if any at all.
In my opinion, definitely worse. Some people seem to like it though.
Not really. There is more attention for the imperial characters (although I didn't like how they portrayed those), but relatively little for the squadmembers. Edy etachment charaters get some screentime now and then though.
You want to read the manga if you want more on the side-charcters of squad 7, they get some great attention and some of them meaningful character development.
Romance. The battle scenes in this look bad and very stiff, and get less attention than the love-triangle that was invented by this anime between Welkin, Alicia and friggin' Faldio.
I think I'll skip this one because I see which way this is heading :P. Thank you for the information.

Just wondering (didn't watch it yet), why is it so infamous?
EDIT: Let me answer your questions.
1) No fanservice at all
2) story is more sad ( its up to you to decide wether its better or worse)
3) Yes they do
4) Both
And there is also an OVA with VC3 story about Nameless squad helping out Squad 7.
What is OVA?
Anime that is not aired on TV and can only be seen on VHS/DVD.
Usually it is additional story or some short clips.
The game and anime both has its similarities but the anime is VERY LOOSELY based on what happens in the game. It's best to be described as an alternate continuity, a complete standalone from the original game. In fact, the only thing that the game and anime shares is the cabin scene although that too is slightly altered.
They decide to take out a lot of events that happen from the game and instead made the anime overly melodramatic with the generic and awfully written love triangle by forcing Faldio as one of the main characters, down on us. The anime also took out particular scenes from the game that gave development to both Alicia and Welkin. Not to say it's all bad in the anime but only some things were passable to down right inconsistent in the story. Both openings for the anime also straight-up spoil the story (particularly ).
Somewhat ironic of a rant I know you probably didn't need since I actually enjoyed the anime the first time I watched it but after taking in the game, I can't appreciate it as much.
but if ur not into that's totally fine everyone has it's own taste of anime anyway.
Anyways, yes, both of the game and anime was altered on many parts. For example, the game is very focused on Welkin at first before Alica being a key character. While the anime started with Alica as the main character before Welkin and Faldio join in.
I did enjoyed the anime series since I like to get different views from each main character's standing. To be honest, romance is light in this in my opinion but yea, fighting is a bit less than it should be. The art of the anime is what I would say normal for everyday Japanese animation.
It's all just my opinions, not going to force you to watch the anime.
The Valkyria Chronicles anime is far from bad; comparing it with some of the stuff that somehow gets a lot of attention (OP mentioned Sword Art Online, which is a terrible anime that got way more recognition than it deserved... SAO and Naruto get all sorts of praise, and people still give me funny looks when I mention masterpieces like Haibane Renmei or Aria or Wolf Children, for God's sake...), it's actually quite good, it still treats well the theme of racism and of "what one must protect", many scenes have a strong emotional impact, and there's quite a bit of exploration on characters like Rosie, Selvaria and Alicia.
The thing is, it's still far, far worse than the game. Stupid love triangles, pointless filler material, changes to very character-relevant events in the plot, more romance than action, the secondary characters are not explored nor spotlighted at all, and many of the protagonists are way out of character compared to the game. Faldio is a douche, Alicia has been turned into a textbook tsundere, Rosie is closer to a damsel in distress than to the death machine she is in the game...
Some good comedy here and there, some good emotional scenes, but overall not worth it if you're not much into anime and if, like me, get angry over huge changes to the source material. XD
I do like to hear people's opinions. I did try to start watching the anime and was 50/50 for me. 50% it was good but the other 50% was bad (mostly like you explained above). But the scene in the log cabin killed it for me and stopped watching :P. Anime really isn't my thing XD. Thanks for sharing your piece of mind
