So let's talk about the ending a bit! [spoilers inside, obviously!]
Just finished the game a couple hours ago, and I've got to say it was pretty impressive, and really looking forward getting the remaining achievements.

Anyways, the ending....
Only I feel like that Faldio's sacrifice was totally unnecessary? I mean he shut down the whole power system, so Maximilian was pretty much harmless at that point, so why jump? The whole scene didn't make much sense, considering he caused the ship to explode, endangering the entire squad....
Well ok, you could explain it that he was feeling guily for his previous actions, but still the whole thing was just weak plot-wise.

Second thing I didn't get was why Maximilian was talking in plural (We, Our, Us etc)?

Aside from that it was a pretty solid story imo, hoping to see Valkyria Chronicles 3 coming to PC one day, since it looked interesting to see the same events from different perspective. (Didn't like 2 from what I've seen, looked like a dumbed down high school drama. But that's my opinion)

Ultimately, the anime does certain character development better (Rosie), certain scenes and other bits more proficiently (Isara), where as the game does a better job at presenting the overall story.

My primary irks with the anime would be Welkin being a clueless derp and Faldio in general. While Anime Faldio had a better ending and ultimately better character, the relationship triangle that he created with Alicia felt forced and a bit gag worthy, and the ruins and him discovering Alicia's bloodline also felt fairly non genuine and almost rushed. There were a lot of "Why is Faldio even here?" moments.

The "tsundere Alicia" complaint is somewhat true, but not as bad as one would imagine from all the talk of it. There were scenes in the anime that were better in the game, as well (the most notable, to me, being after the defeat of Max).

And, yes, I agree. Game Faldio crapped out at the end. Could kicked Max in the back of the knee, shoulder thrown him, whacked him in the back of the head, literally anything other than the not-heroic sacrifice.

If you were to sit down and make a conglomerate between the two, I imagine you'd end up with something quite brilliant.

I didn't mind Faldio's sacrifice as much. One of the things I assumed is that, even with the generators failing, he still has some power, and wasn't going to go quietly. It probably wouldn't have been as big as Selvaria's, but I'll buy that he would have used the final flame, and it still would've had enough power to engulf anyone on the Marmota. Faldio also lost everything by commiting that act against Alicia, and he realized that he was fundementally wrong, and therefore threw it all away for nothing. So, I think that, in his view, the sacrifice was the only way he could exonerate himself in both his and other's eyes.

I was also not quite as behind his sacrifice in the Anime. Starting at Naggiar, I think there was a brillant setup, having him watch his entire squad get incinerated by Selvaria, and paralleling what Welkin went through with Isara's death. When he shot Alicia, my initial assumption was that he was doing it for revenge. But they went a different route, and essentially both the Princess and Welkin forgave him for this. Because he was forgiven, I found his sacrifice in the Anime rather pointless, because he had this forgiveness, and it really wasn't any different than what the other members of Squad 7 were doing. He just was unlucky enough to get critically wounded.

I do agree with Senor Mango that between the game's version and the anime's version, there's a brilliant story here.
Anime's Faldio's death was much like ingame Isara's death: it just happened and everyone got over it fast.

Guy blows himself up, and Welkin is like "What was that noise?" and continues running.
It was less that everyone got over it quickly, more that Welkin was the only one who heard the blast, and the narrative went into epilogue mode directly afterwards.

Ooh, expanding on my earlier combining the two series statement, the post-Max endings actually fit together with no hassle, as well as not interfering with Welkin and Alicia's appearance in VCII.
Putting them together actually makes the whole thing jive quite well.
