My primary irks with the anime would be Welkin being a clueless derp and Faldio in general. While Anime Faldio had a better ending and ultimately better character, the relationship triangle that he created with Alicia felt forced and a bit gag worthy, and the ruins and him discovering Alicia's bloodline also felt fairly non genuine and almost rushed. There were a lot of "Why is Faldio even here?" moments.
The "tsundere Alicia" complaint is somewhat true, but not as bad as one would imagine from all the talk of it. There were scenes in the anime that were better in the game, as well (the most notable, to me, being after the defeat of Max).
And, yes, I agree. Game Faldio crapped out at the end. Could kicked Max in the back of the knee, shoulder thrown him, whacked him in the back of the head, literally anything other than the not-heroic sacrifice.
If you were to sit down and make a conglomerate between the two, I imagine you'd end up with something quite brilliant.

I was also not quite as behind his sacrifice in the Anime. Starting at Naggiar, I think there was a brillant setup, having him watch his entire squad get incinerated by Selvaria, and paralleling what Welkin went through with Isara's death. When he shot Alicia, my initial assumption was that he was doing it for revenge. But they went a different route, and essentially both the Princess and Welkin forgave him for this. Because he was forgiven, I found his sacrifice in the Anime rather pointless, because he had this forgiveness, and it really wasn't any different than what the other members of Squad 7 were doing. He just was unlucky enough to get critically wounded.
I do agree with Senor Mango that between the game's version and the anime's version, there's a brilliant story here.
Guy blows himself up, and Welkin is like "What was that noise?" and continues running.
Ooh, expanding on my earlier combining the two series statement, the post-Max endings actually fit together with no hassle, as well as not interfering with Welkin and Alicia's appearance in VCII.
Putting them together actually makes the whole thing jive quite well.
