The English translation took a LOT of liberties.
I understand like 1% of Japanese, but I do prefer the aesthetic of Japanese voice acting so I'm playing that with English subtitles. However I do understand most of the daily chit-chat and I could already tell, well, whoever did the English translation...was very unprofessional.

Lots of omission, addition, taking words out and replacing them with completely unrelated terms. Nothing major (so far), but in case the dev is reading this, next time you might wanna find some a tad more bilingual and respects the original work.

just use japanese original voices with english subtitles. it does not matter if some translations are not word for word then. from the tone of voice you understand pretty much everything anyway.

aside from some really good voice actors like steve blum and grey delisle english dubbing is s*** anyway, they sound like those english dubbed hentai on those other hub site

Funny because I think some characters sound a lot better when using English dubs. Rosie and Jann for example.

No, it's worse.

Because it's not just the text but the tone/intent that differs. So you'd be getting something from the audio... then something else from the text. But it's kinda expected? Or will the typical NA player understand why there's a -san there instead of a -sama and so on. Even large MMOs like FFXIV have this exact problem.

It slightly annoys me... but I know this is how things are done. One of the best dubs I've ever heard was for the FMP series. Despite 'americanising' things, they kept the tone and even put in puns and in-jokes but that sort of thing is really rare.

-----

For some of us, just turn off the subtitles and watch/listen in japanese. For the rest, english for both dub/text (and you'll wonder what the fuss was all about).

Besides... shouldn't we be losing our minds over the fact that Melchiott wears a mini-skirt to war? Oh wait...

-----

I'd pay real money to have a 'subs' that were more true to the japanese audio though.

One man's treasure is another cat's scratching post? But I 'hear' yer. If you watch a lot of anime, you'd think everyone was either an old man, a young boy or school-girls.

This is the only game where if I play in Japanese audio, it pisses me off. The English subtitles totally do NOT go with the Japanese audio translation. I think what happened is that they did an English dub, and based the subtitles off that.

Dubbing sucks, peiod. English voice actors suck, period. I just recruited Cherry Stijnen.... with a j, it's silent, but she's not......
Just like all of that added BS was silent in the Japanese version, as in wasn't there at all.

The rank doesn't matter either because different countries do it differently. More importantly it doesn't matter even if it's called Army Group 7. This is fiction, and who knows what is the size of a squad in a factional universe in a fictional continent called Europa in a fictional country called Gallia...
Well I checked it and it's called "第7小隊" in Japanese, which means 7th platoon. So "squad" came out of translator's ass.

In Japan we use the same kanji for platoon and squad. It depends on the nuance/context as to which is used (Japanese is far more contextual as a language than English is - a lot of what we communicate is implied and not really said out loud which causes a lot of issues when translating). Even the compound itself means "little company" so I don't think the translation is wrong in this case.

If you want to talk about crazy translations, the American movie "Army of Darkness" got renamed "Captain Supermarket" for release here :-/

Finally, another person who appreciate the awesomeness of English Jann dub.

I vastly prefer English dub for this game. It just sounds right, I dunno. I use Japanese dub for Neptunia, though.

The most probable reason why I think English Jann is better is because they didn't just translate what Jann said, they localized him. Japanese Jann doesn't even sound like a (stereotypical Western) homosexual.

Unfortunately by localizing Leon they made him intolerable little prick who deserves some serious beating... So I guess localization can swing both ways... ;)

Anyone have news of a fan translation in the works? My progress was wiped out by a crash so I'm done with the game for now, but I might come back later if the dialog is less cringeworthy.

getting upset over the word 'squad' being used instead of 'platoon'... actually, most of the angry ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in this thread.... is about as aspergery as pepperspraying a Gamestop employee over Sonic's arms being blue now.

1% japanese does not cut it. Do you expect them to use google translate? Translating word for word does not work period.
Google translate is godawful for Japanese. Put in a longer Japanese text and what comes out makes zero sense. The entire translation matrix utterly faulty.

And you English native speakers would be surprised how bad dubs can be. All US/UK movies and TV shows dubbed into German? Oivech! Apart from taking liberties, these things are usually full of outright translation errors. In the movie Gettysburg, for example, Col. Chamberlain's comment how the Reb artillery always overshoots (and you can clearly hear him say "Reb") was turned into Red artillery in the German dub. How does ♥♥♥♥ like this pass QC?

It's not really unusual. The more I look into things the more I notice localization companies just tend to do whatever the hell they want and pass it off with vague excuses. It's the worst when you're playing some niche japanese game and you come across some meme, or some cringe-worthy weeaboo crap. The idea of 'westernizing' something that's appealing in the first place largely because of the culture it comes from bothers me too. If I wanted a western game I'd play one.

I have no option to change from the english dub to the japanese voice track any advice on why this is? :)

You can change it when you're in the title screen.

Actually, most of the time part of the Japanese staff is involved in the translation nowadays. Those changes, like them or not, are approved by the original creators.

There will never be a 1:1 translation either. The languages just are way too different.
