Or maybe Japanese army organisation differs very much from western ones in this regard?
Also instead of "Machinegun" the primary weapon of Shocktroopers clearly is meant to be a "Sub-machinegun" (SMG).
Sigh... what are the odds that some fan translation will eventually come up?
Why change the original japanese script to this crappy english script?
I hope the one who changed or the one ordering it meets tragic end in his career :)
Edit: I did forget one of the more dominant characters, Jann. This makes it tank + 12.
Translation errors like these doesn't bother me because they don't change the context. It doesn't matter if it's called a squad, a platoon, a group or a fellowship. But if there are translation errors that actually change the whole meaning of something then that's somewhat disappointing.
I agree with Gekkibi, that example signifies very little if anything. People are undertandably reluctant to post details of where they have actually changed the meaning or dumbed down the subtelty of the original Japanese script, but there is a spoiler tag and i would really like to know about some specific instances so we have some evidence to discuss the question why they have butchered the original (if they have, of course).
Note : sorry for my bad english XD
I wouldn't say it is a "butcherer's translation", but that it is a rewritten script, very different from the Japanese one, obviously put together to make it more fluid and lighten the inevitable awkward animu moments.
This is very apparent in the characters of the 3 main protagonists (The hero, his adopted sister and the heroin).
As an example, in the early game, the English and Japanese Alicias share very little in common (she comes out as a self-righteous annoying brat in English, while in Japanese she is your run-of-the-mill "I am trying to act strong but I am actually weak because I am a woman" heroin.). At the point I am in-game, she is still very judgemental in English, something totally absent from her Japanese persona.
Samewise, English Wekin is much more male than Japanese Welkin on a regular basis.
His mirror-sister is the exact reverse : she comes up much stronger in the English script - the lack of that apparent aspect doesn't mean she isn't, in Japanese, just that she doesn't show it - one of those occurences were rewritting the character might be much more sensible than betraying her by turning her into an absolute weakling by translating her, words for words.
In the end it is Sega's property, so they do whatever they please with it, but the inclusion of Japanese voices lead to this weird schizophrenic gaming experience, where you got characters acting one way in cutscenes and another way in-game, which is kind of off-puting
So when all things considered, the game only need proper original japanese script to english subtitle translation. Right now we are forced to read english subtitle that are based from english modified script while hearing japanese voice. Its such a shame really T-T
