The English translation took a LOT of liberties.
I understand like 1% of Japanese, but I do prefer the aesthetic of Japanese voice acting so I'm playing that with English subtitles. However I do understand most of the daily chit-chat and I could already tell, well, whoever did the English translation...was very unprofessional.

Lots of omission, addition, taking words out and replacing them with completely unrelated terms. Nothing major (so far), but in case the dev is reading this, next time you might wanna find some a tad more bilingual and respects the original work.

If there is one problem I have, its that it should be the "7th Platoon" or "7th Company", not "Squad 7". Platoon would make more sense because Welkin's rank.

A Squad does not have 40 members, and tank support. It was a mistranslation I think.

I don't want to make this into a realism discussion, I apologize.
You are right, it should be a platoon.
Or maybe Japanese army organisation differs very much from western ones in this regard?

Also instead of "Machinegun" the primary weapon of Shocktroopers clearly is meant to be a "Sub-machinegun" (SMG).

The english subs are based on english dub. Which means its been localized for US audience. Its not that its unprofessional, its that US has childish way to entertain with stupid jokes and such which always need to be some reason on any oversea entertainment product. Best example i can think is Digimon Adventures S01

Yea, the translations are attrocious and, saying that they "take liberties" is an egregious use of the phrase. Very frequently things get added, or left out, or just given completely different meanings when there exists a more fitting English colloquialism.

Horribad English translation is the only reason I postpone my playthrough. I just can't stand inconsistencies between what I read and the common phrases I hear. And from what I read in this thread it even butchers dialoges that are critical to plot.
Sigh... what are the odds that some fan translation will eventually come up?
Harven 2015 年 1 月 31 日 上午 4:56
Why not just translate it, why bother changing the dialog?
Why change the original japanese script to this crappy english script?
I hope the one who changed or the one ordering it meets tragic end in his career :)

The size of a squad isn't defined anywhere. Different countries (during different times) have different sized squads. Plus if it really is a platoon and not a squad then the anime series got it terribly wrong because the size of "whatever 7" is the tank + 11 (Alicia, Rosie, Largo, Susie, Marina, Oscar, Emile, Aisha, Edy, Homer and Karl), assuming I didn't forget anyone. So either the game got it wrong or the anime series got it wrong. Pick your poison. ;)

Edit: I did forget one of the more dominant characters, Jann. This makes it tank + 12.

Yes, but that still leaves the problem with commander's rank, or Welkin isn't a lieutenant in the anime? I like it how the wiki states that "Squad 7 is the seventh platoon of the Gallian Militia's 3rd Regiment", so maybe "Squad 7" is just 7th platoon's nickname, and not reffering to a military formation.

The rank doesn't matter either because different countries do it differently. More importantly it doesn't matter even if it's called Army Group 7. This is fiction, and who knows what is the size of a squad in a factional universe in a fictional continent called Europa in a fictional country called Gallia...

Well I checked it and it's called "第7小隊" in Japanese, which means 7th platoon. So "squad" came out of translator's ass.

I'm also quite sure that Varrot commands a company and not a regiment (like it's mentioned in the English subs), am I correct?

Translation errors like these doesn't bother me because they don't change the context. It doesn't matter if it's called a squad, a platoon, a group or a fellowship. But if there are translation errors that actually change the whole meaning of something then that's somewhat disappointing.

I agree with Gekkibi, that example signifies very little if anything. People are undertandably reluctant to post details of where they have actually changed the meaning or dumbed down the subtelty of the original Japanese script, but there is a spoiler tag and i would really like to know about some specific instances so we have some evidence to discuss the question why they have butchered the original (if they have, of course).
Harven 2015 年 2 月 1 日 下午 8:20
  1. Its very dissapointing when you know fan translations that only get some donations is way better than official translators that get paid for their works.

  2. When you do some localizations you should preserve the originality of the original language not openly changed it. This include all small details like honorifics, the way the character talk, the intonations, the way they address something or someone, etc.

  3. Why would you change the way the character speaks? Why change the words they speaks? Think of yoda from star wars, the way they did it is like delivering yoda without his unique way of speaking. Whatever the reason is, whether they are not competent enough to deliver its originality or maybe they just enjoy destroying the original script.

  4. The best way is they need to include the proper original japanese script to english subtitle translations so everybody can choose what they want to hear and read.

Note : sorry for my bad english XD

There's integrity, and then there's being pedantic just for the sake of feeling smugly superior...
Namekujisennin 2015 年 2 月 1 日 下午 9:27
Personally, I put aside technicalities which I don't have the slightest issue with ("squad", "troop", "companies", who cares, really?)
I wouldn't say it is a "butcherer's translation", but that it is a rewritten script, very different from the Japanese one, obviously put together to make it more fluid and lighten the inevitable awkward animu moments.
This is very apparent in the characters of the 3 main protagonists (The hero, his adopted sister and the heroin).
As an example, in the early game, the English and Japanese Alicias share very little in common (she comes out as a self-righteous annoying brat in English, while in Japanese she is your run-of-the-mill "I am trying to act strong but I am actually weak because I am a woman" heroin.). At the point I am in-game, she is still very judgemental in English, something totally absent from her Japanese persona.
Samewise, English Wekin is much more male than Japanese Welkin on a regular basis.
His mirror-sister is the exact reverse : she comes up much stronger in the English script - the lack of that apparent aspect doesn't mean she isn't, in Japanese, just that she doesn't show it - one of those occurences were rewritting the character might be much more sensible than betraying her by turning her into an absolute weakling by translating her, words for words.

In the end it is Sega's property, so they do whatever they please with it, but the inclusion of Japanese voices lead to this weird schizophrenic gaming experience, where you got characters acting one way in cutscenes and another way in-game, which is kind of off-puting :arkdog:
Harven 2015 年 2 月 1 日 下午 10:28
I think its up to people which one they like best whether its english or japanese, whether its cowardly japanese persona or manly english persona. Personally i like the original one and since its japanese title so i choose the japanese over the english.

So when all things considered, the game only need proper original japanese script to english subtitle translation. Right now we are forced to read english subtitle that are based from english modified script while hearing japanese voice. Its such a shame really T-T

note : sorry for my bad english XD
