I can't believe this just happend
Bought the game during the start of the steam summer sale. It's a tough but enjoyable game. However they done goofed REAL bad with the save system...

I was just at chapter 13 and I decided to check out the dlc 'Edy's Detachment'. In hopes of getting some extra experience and because it doesn't take place AFTER the final battle. So I save during the fight, I finish the fight a small hour later.

....It then takes me back to the main menu, I want to load my game and to my horror, the only save there is that of during the fight in the dlc. So all my progress is pretty much gone, I'm going to try and do a system restore. Still, mistakes like these really shouldn't be in games. And let this be a warning to anyone who picks this game up. :bored:

**UPDATE**
System restore of a day earlier didn't recover my save file before playing the dlc. :(

You can have multiple savegames, a great lot of them... and the game DOES tell you the Edy DLC mission is NOT part of the main story campaign, and if you don''t save progress will be lost indeed.

Yes there is a very limited number of save positions available after that you have to overwrite some older save to be able to save. It is what it is I suppose and while I do wish they had more save positions it was built for console so I can see why they made it that way.

the games warn you to not overwrite you game save when entering the DLC.

or at least it did in console. i didn't play those DLC in pc yet.

They also do so in this version.

"Very limited"? I have like 7 savegames and I can still create new ones!

you only need:
1 slot to your game progress
1 slot for command mode (or maybe two) - overwrite them when you go to another mission.
1 slot for the dlcs (or maybe two if you want to save both of them)

Same here. I made one new savegame at the beginning of each chapter from chapter 7 onward, and I still did not reach the limit at the end of the game. So they may be finite, but "very" limited is an exageration.

But yeah, I strongly advise against having only one save, in ANY game. Losing an entire campaign because of a corrupt/lost save file is something that happened to me a few decades ago. Then I learnt the mantra "save often, and on alternating slots". Still a painful experience when it hits you. Especially when you're on chapter 13... Ouch.

Having only one save is something you shouldn't be doing in any game. Games like the old Resident Evil and Silent Hill series thaught us that years ago, your whole game progress could be totally ruined if you screw things up and end up in a dead end situation where you just cannot progress anymore for whatever reason.
I know modern gamers are too used to auto-save and checkpoint features and they often fall for this, but VC plays different, and it has its reasons to do so.

This, do this and save yourself a lot of troubles.

Yeah I think the limit is around 8 to 10, where most games made for PC have unlimited saves because HD space is not a factor where as games made for consoles always have limited saves because of space to be able to store the save games.

Also, keep in mind that sicne this is on a PC, you Absolutely Do have functionally unlimited saves. Go into the folders, copythe relevant files, stick them somewhere safe. then feel free to create more saves.

Common workaround, and highly useful.

That said, the big issue is that this game does nto hold hands with an autosave feature. So remember that.
