Valkyria Chronicles 4 Trailer Discussion
So this is a discussion for the new VC4 trailer. If you noticed anything, feel free to mention it.

Some things to note:

The Federation from the first game seems to be the focus of this game.

There seems to be a VC3 setup where there is a small cast of characters who are all equally important to plot, unlike VC1 and 2 where only a few characters were important.

There is at least one Valkyria. We don't know if she is allied or hostile.

The following classes seem to be shown: Scout, Shocktrooper, Sniper, Tank Commander. If any others were shown, please mention it.

The Sniper girl seems to be based on a scrapped Darcsen concept, which was a beast tribe similar to Laguz from Fire Emblem. I don't think she is part of this beast tribe, but her hat and design looks similar to the one character of this tribe we saw.

These classes are in the dev intro: Lancer, Scout, Sniper, Shock, Engineer, Tank Commander, possible Gunner, whatever class the Blonde girl is (Mortarer/Grenadier/whatever)
There is also the gatling/bunker symbol among the enemies.

The Federation forces have two tanks in the dev intro
The gematsu article also says that:
"By playing this downloadable content, the Edelweiss operated by Welkin Gunther [...] will be made available in the main story of Valkyria Chronicles 4"
So we can assume tanks can de chosen/switched for deployment (unlike VC1 where they were automatically deployed by default).

The main character and Blonde girl talk about "living to see Hafen again" while on this ship. We don't know who or what that is, but it indicates they knew each other before EWII
Doesn't the japanese word he uses mean "going back to" or "return to"? My impression was that it was their home town in the federation and they were talking about going back there (like it wasn't a one way suicide mission).

1. Same here! I found VC1 but was never able to play 2 or 3 because I don't own a PSP and I'm not Japanese
You are aware that 3 was translated more or less in full right?

Yes, I just have no easy way to play it.

I wanna know how they'll work the Edelweiss into the story. Also, I don't speak Japanese so I don't know what word he actually uses. I'm going off of the English trailer.

New info from Gematsu:

2 DLC missions that tie into the main story. These have only been confirmed for the PS4 edition but I don't know how they'd get away with only putting exclusive characters on PS4:

"A product code for the additional story downloadable content “Joint Operation with Squad 7” – A story in which Squad 7 from the original Valkyria Chronicles appears. By playing this downloadable content, the Edelweiss operated by Welkin Gunther, as well as Alicia Melchiot, Largo Potter, and Brigitte “Rosie” Stark will be made available in the main story of Valkyria Chronicles 4. Additionally, Isara Gunther can be acquired as a unit for the first time."

"First-print copies of Valkyria Chronicles 4 for PlayStation 4 in Japan will include the additional mission downloadable content, “Preemptive Special Tactics.” By clearing this mission, you can use Edy Nelson from the original Valkyria Chronicles as a unit in the main story."

I would like to point out that Isara was available in VC2 and 3 as a playable Armor Tech. Since that has been Isara's class in both games she appears in, I don't see how they'll get away with changing it. I'm just going to assume that this confirms Armor Techs in this game.

Update: comicbook.com worded the DLC like every console is getting it. As well as talking about a special 10th Anniversery Memorial Pack (Gematsu spoke of this too, I just had skimmed over it). It's definitely hitting Japan and it's going to give the Squad 7 DLC via a product code

More info for the main characters:

Claude Wallace- The protagonist. Edinburgh Army 101st Division No. 1 Battle Brigade No. 32 Armored Ranger Battalion Squad E squad leader and tanker. A first lieutenant. He is a serious, passionate, and caring commanding officer.

Riley Miller- The heroine. A member of the Edinburgh Army 101st Division No. 1 Battle Brigade No. 32 Armored Ranger Batallion’s Heavy Weapons Support Team. A grenadier. A second lieutenant technician. She is positive and cheerful, and ambitious in that she pushes forward without fear of failure.

(Hooray for class confirmation. This means that Grenadiers have completely replaced Mortarers. However, based on cutscene footage, it looks like they'll function the same. I guess they didn't want Mortarers to look so much like Lancers...?)

Raz- A division officer of Squad E. Since he is of the persecuted “Darcsen” people, he does not have a last name. He belongs to the infantry class of the army.

(Note: More gameplay screenshots were released. Raz is a Shocktrooper and not a Gunner like I previously suspected.)

Kai Schulen- A division officer of Squad E and a prodigy sharpshooter known as the “One Shot Killer.”

More gameplay screenshots: Nothing special here. Just Raz and Claude talking and Raz (Shocktrooper) killing an enemy Scout.

Story details from comicbook.com:

“It is the year 1935 EC…

The continent of Europa is engulfed in the flames of the Second Europan War between the Atlantic Federation and the Autocratic Eastern Imperial Alliance. Although the Federation struggles valiantly against the Empire’s forces, the relentless imperial military machine threatens to consume them. With victory slipping away, the Federation executes Operation Northern Cross: a last-ditch attempt to capture the imperial capital and end the war. Commander Claude Wallace and his loyal childhood friends in Squad E are sent to fight for the desperate operation’s success, but they will have to endure harsh bone-chilling elements, waves of imperial soldiers, and the terrifying Valkyria… and unravel a grave truth that will shake them to the core.”

"Ikite Hafen ni kaero". "Kaeru" is to go back, if you're thinking about difference with "modoru" - afaik the latter implies "turning back halfway without finishing what you were doing", so to speak. "Kaeru" is just your straight come back/return, so you're probably right.

I assume since Squad 7 is in the DLC their appearance is just fanservice and not part of VC4's canon :P

Nah, if they wanted fanservice, we'd see Edy on the list (the only non-core squad 7 member in VC3 joint mission as far as I remember).

Well the mission is called "Joint Operation with Squad 7" or something along those lines, which probably means it's going to feature the VC4 characters. It probably doesn't matter to the overall canon, but it definitely fits in somewhere

Edy isn't in that mission, but she's in the second DLC mission. What's odd though is that only Edy is mentioned. I guess the Edy Detachment isn't returning this time around...

"First-print copies of Valkyria Chronicles 4 for PlayStation 4". Damn, they REALLY want to sell those PS4's, don't they? Also screw platform exclusive content for the same game. Seriously. That blight needs to die in a fire.

Another website worded it like it wasn't PS4 exclusive. I really doubt after this PC riot they'll try to make console exclusive content

If this world has taught me anything, not underestimating corporate greed in gaming industry is deffo high on that list :)
My only hope either way is that they'll end up making the PC port with all DLCs neat and included, like our VC1 port. I'm not buying a PS4 or a Switch for one game.

I'm praying over my Switch at this point. I really hope they don't try to screw us over with lower graphics quality or not give us DLCs. It really seems like they're focusing on PS4. If they do make a PC version at launch, that's the one I'll be getting

I'm kinda salty that they decided to skip PC. After all PC version of VC1 saved Valkyria from being put into a grave.
